Is my Be Quiet Pure Power L8 630W compatible with 1950X Threadripper?

Hi all,

I am about to start purchasing components for a new build soon, a TR4 X399 Taichi motherboard, AMD 1950X CPU and some DDR4 RAM.
I only have one question- can I reuse my current PSU Be Quiet Pure Power L8 630W with the new components?

My concern is that 1950X need more CPU power (being 2 CPUs glued together) and requires two pins to be connected to the motherboard- one 4pin 12V and another 8 pin 12V.

I know pretty much nothing about PSUs, only how to connect them to a conventional motherboards.

I read a topic online (reddit, I think) according to which 630W will be sufficient to power the 1950X and a GTX 1080ti as long as I don't overclock and don't SLI the graphics card. They also said one would need a special PSU with two 8 PINs o something like that.

Here's a link to my current PSU:

Much appreciated.

I would get a better PSU. Looking at the X399 Taichi, it needs both an 8-pin and a 4-pin CPU power cable. Your current PSU only has 1 4+4 pin connector and can only provide 564W on the 12V rails. It's also built by HEC, an OEM who build budget units for a variety of manufacturers.

Something like this would be a very good choice:

It's built by Superflower and contains good quality internals, superior to your existing PSU.

I'm not sure what the power draw at the wall would be, but 750W would be playing it safe and the G2 750W is only £20 more than the 650W model. The excess power capacity will also allow the PSU to run cooler and quieter as it won't be working so hard.

Thank you very much, Borealis.
I was hoping to save some money but if that is indeed the case I will get thе new PSU.

All the best.

The G2 750W is just one suggestion. Either of these would do the job just as well:

The Superflower Leadex II is a very good PSU but be aware it has LEDs you can't turn off. Some people like the LEDs, others hate them.
The Bitfenix is out of stock at the moment, but it's also a very good PSU and is significantly cheaper than the Superflower or EVGA.

You also get a 10 year warranty with the G2 750w compared to 7 years on the G2 650w. The problem now is that the G2 is end of life having been replaced by the even better G3 which of course is out of stock. Let me suggest a alternative in the form of the newly released Seasonic Focus Plus 750w which, unusually for Seasonic, is very reasonably priced. It has a single 12v rail and the whole 750w is available on it and has a 10 year warranty. It also has a pair of 4+4 cpu power cables which you seem to need for Threadripper. Jonnyguru has already reviewed it here and was very impressed by it's regulation and gave it 9.6/10.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Factory overclocked non-reference GTX 10180 Tis can draw upwards 300W (and some more in milliseconds scale peaks) and 1950X's TDP is 180W so with rest of the the parts worst case consumption is clearly over 500W...
Which would be really lot for 630W PSU.
Especially for already used second tier PSU with cheap capacitors.

Would basically keep 750W PSU as minimum... and for crap brands like Kolink 1000W.
