Is my card dying?

Currently have an 8800gt which has run fine for ages up untill the last few weeks.

When playing a game the screen flashes black after a random amount of time and stays there untill I tab out or hit ctrl alt delete. Vista then shows that a display driver has stopped working and has been recovered. I also booted the pc up once to find a 640 by 480 ish login screen and no mouse, after hitting enter to login vista threw up an error and took me back to the login screen. A friend had a similar issue with an 8800gtx and his card gave up a few weeks later.

The only other time I have had this issue was when I first got the card and decided to overclock which caused it to flick to a black screen when I pushed it too far. Since then I have ran it at stock as its pre overclocked anyway.

Would it be worth RMA'ing? There are no instantly obvious problems with it as of yet and do not want the card sent back to me!

Thanks

Could be corrupt drivers, try updating them to the latest version and seeing if it makes any difference but that does sound like some form of VPU recover is kicking in - it might be overheating so try cleaning out the fan or turning it up.

Thanks for the reply. Will try reinstalling the drviers, thought my poor cable management might have something to do with the temps but looking at it they seem fine and sit at 60 ish under load. It does have a none refrence cooler like this

Ati tool shows no artifacts after 10 mins which makes me wonder if they would accept it as an rma.

i had the exact same problem, and if u leave it, it just gets worse. i RMA'd mine and was told that the memory had completely failed, luckily though, they had no 8800gt's in stock to send me a replacement so i got a 4850 for an extra 5 quid....

RMA you card mate, its borked

Thanks for confirming that, ill give it another go today and see if it still does it after fresh drivers. Seems a bit of a weird way for a card to go, my last two nvidias to go went out with a bang. It's a shame that they fail to make a card capable of lasting even a year, this was bought in february and hasnt had what I would call heavy use (i went out and got a gf haha).

The place I got it from doesnt seem to have the same card in stock but does have some pre-overclocked msi ones so I might not get so lucky :(

I also encounted a similar problem , and i knew the memory on the card was at fault. Simple RMA, and i requested a diff card (8800GT i had was the first lot with the not so brilliant slim line cooler) Depends on where the card came from, and the RMA policy as to what happens next

I can no longer boot into vista, having to use safe mode with networking. I think its dead now haha

Funny you should say that, put a fresh vista 64 bit on it last week

funny you should say that, so did i.

RMA you card mate, its borked

i notice that it's getting progressively worse as i use it, turned memory down to 820 and seems better but i will look into an RMA when i order my HD4870.

Well after it refusing to boot vista it started working again. Fine for a good afternoon of assasins creed then crashed on gears of war tonight, same thing, driver recover. Probably the vram dying but i guess ill have to wait for it to be more consistant or they wont rma :(

Could "accidently" break it huirry the process up, a litle bit.
If you deffo know it is broken, but on its last legs!

Its well fooked now!!

Turned the pc on today booted fine. Came back from town and booted, was greeted by a fatal system error blue screen when turning on. Next boot attempt and my 8800gt has gone :O!

Its been back alive this evening with the usual stutter in games, has yours died yet? haha

I rang the etailer who said they run a 3d mark 06 loop to test, will see if it mucks up in that and send it back if it does.
