Is My GPU Holding Me Back?

I've a P5Q Pro, 4G G.Skill PC2-8000 @ 900Mhz, E6750 @ 3.6Ghz and an X1950 Pro, running Vista Ultimate x64.

This runs Prime95 stable for 8 hours, but I've had a BSOD and a couple of random game crashes.

I've only got an Acer 1916W 19" monitor and am happy enough running 1440x900, if the GPU is the problem and I need to replace it, what should I get, bearing in mind, price is an issue, as I need another HDD as well.

Cheers.

The problem is that money is a big issue and as I'm not going to go over 1440x900, would a 4670 be sufficient, as it's over £40 less and nearly the price of an HDD.

considering the price difference, i would definitely save up for the 4850 if i was you. Whats your budget?

As little as possible really mate, but if the 4850 is the way to go, I suppose I could hold off on the HDD for a couple of months and sell some of my recently upgraded gear.

If I went for the 4670, then I could get the HDD at the same time.

Firstly are you upgrading because you think your X1950pro is at fault?

Obviously you are a running an overclocked system and yet you say its prime stable, did you run the prime test recently?

What games do you play? if you don't mind not having loads of AA or playing the latest titles maxed out the your choice of HD4650 will be ideal.

I use to have a HD3850 and it was cracking little card, the 4650 leaves it standing.

Have a look at this for example.

By the way you missed the most important part from your rig, your power supply, what is it?

I would not get a 4670. Its 128bit interface must kill it completely.

I agree a 2nd hand 8800gt might be worth looking at.

edit - looking at that graph above 4670 looks like a decent performer. Whats it like in other games?

Well I feel stupid now:o:o

I was tweaking the bios on Thursday and forgot to reload my stable bios profile afterwards, hence me still being on FSB strap 400, which doesn't like my set up, now I'm back to the stable setting, I hope that will cure the problem.

Thanks for the input and I'll go back to hitting myself over the head with a frying pan for a while.:o
