Hi , i have a R9 270 , bought it second hand 18 months ago it was a bit noisy so used MSi afterburner to keep the fan speed permanently at 20%.

Had no problems untill last night when i started getting artifacts and tearing, checked the temp and it was +90c.
Reinstalled drivers re-seated card but they are still there, presume ive fried it.

Sounds likely, If you was artificially holding the fans back you should have kept monitoring it, I like to check temps at the end of a gaming session, I use both gpu-z and real temp as I can see at a glance what the gpu and cpu maxed out at and if needed how it averaged.

I imagine you got your money's worth though so if you need to replace it keep this in mind in future.

Did you not think of monitoring temps. I bet those VRMs have been cooking for all those months :S

I just...cant...whhhhhhhhy?!

If those artifacts are persistent through multiple games/application's I'm pretty sure its fried.

Why fix to a point? Used Afterburner to set a curve and have it at 20% until perhaps the card hits 80C or something.

Never ever fix a card fans at a set speed as it wont respond if temps go northwards!

Used to monitor temps regularly for the first couple of months got lazy never checked them since last christmas.
Probably the deep covering of fluff never helped much either.
Just checked and it also happens in counter strike , will get an RX 460 (and monitor the temps).

had to the fans sounded like a hoover and the missus whinged.

Fixing a graphics card's fans at 20% is a bad, bad idea...as you've found out.

Set a fan profile of one to one with a minimum of 30-40% and if it's still artifacting then it's probably fubared.

You've killed it. Graphics card need to dissipate heat for a reason and fixing it at 20% which is effectively idle speeds you've been slowly killing of your cards memory over time.

I would suggest raising the fan profile to 50% and underclocking your memory and see if that helps with the artifacting.
