My laptop seems to have become extremely unstable. It was working fine last week but has gone down hill since. From reading this site I think it's the Video RAM which is dying as I get random artefacts over the screen. ATItool failed around 1 second after I clicked 'scan for artefacts'; it filled with yellow then crashed the laptop.

When it first started happening the screen would get distorted but I could continue working on it; as the screen got refreshed from moving windows around it would clear up and everything would be fine. As for now, the screen is going black and I get no response from the keyboard.

I've removed the top of the case and confirmed the fans are spinning, and I've even blown it out with an air compressor (overkill+ ;)) to no avail.

I get the same problem on both Windows and Linux (fresh install) so I doubt it's driver related. What's odd is that although it's effectively dead and the keyboard won't work I can take out and put back in my wireless card and it will power up after a few seconds after I assume grabbing a connection.

Oh, it's an Acer Aspire 9100. I was given it for scrap so I'm not too bothered. It's already been rescued from death once by my Dad who found a chip which was hanging off and re-soldered it - been working for a year or two since. :D.

Thanks :).

It's on-board so no you can't. However, I'd quite like to know before I fork out for a new laptop.
