Will heatsink fins close on their own?

Hello there, I took apart my ps3 and was inspecting my heatsink, one of the metal support things has came off and I want to know if it will affect the preformance of my ps3 heatsink, all of the spacing between the fins is the same, does the metal tab just make sure the fins stay at a certain distance? Also do they aid in cooling as in transferring heat? But my biggest concern and question is will my heatsink still work properly, and have the same preformance?

Thanks.

Also another thing I would like to know is:
Will my heatsinks fins close on their own without the fin support? Or will they just stay the same?

I cant really tell anything by the image but i doubt a small metal tab would do anything other than make sure the fins are spaced.

Fins just add surface area, those tabs just keep the spacing relatively even and clear. It's fine. I bet you could bend 1/4 of the heatsink all shapes with minimal temp increase*

* don't do this

Yeah what d_brennen said, just wanted to check the tabs are not attached to anything, probably not but just making sure :P

OH MY GOD! You broke it off! The PS3 will implode in the next 30 minutes, sucking the entire world into Oblivion! :( AND WE HAVE YOU TO THANK!! *shakes fist*

In all seriousness, no - it's gonna make no difference.
