Is my house cabling ducked?

Hi all,

I've just bought a Netgear Gigabit switch withthe view of streaming data from my PC upstairs over my LAN to my PS3 downstairs.

Config is as follows...

Virgin Modem to Netgear Wireless Router (10/100) need this as my good lady wife uses her laptop downstairs/around the house (wireless), this router is then plugged into my new switch (10/100/1000) I've also got my PS3 (used for streaming), my Samsung Blu-ray player & a Cat5e cable to the wall with my PC connected at the other end via another Cat5e cable upstairs.

The problem is that my PC will not connect to the switch at 1000 (1gig) I've tried everthing even going in to the device manager and forcing the PC to 1gig (resulting in my device manager showing 1gig full & the switch showing 100mps).

One thing I have done is wired the laptop to the switch and this connects (via auto-negotiate) at 1gig.

To me it looks like either the socket in the PC room (the one the PC plugs into) or the socket downstairs (the one plugged into the switch) or the internal wiring inbetween is faulty... But any ideas welcome.

Thanks

Simon

You have equipment that doesn't support 1000 so you will be dropped down to what it does support max which is 100 and why do you have to have it at 1000 there is nothing wrong with 100 it will handle your needs no problem

Erm, that's nonsense. Every device connected to the switch does not have to do gigE for any device to do it.
If you use the same cable etc. does the laptop connect at 1000 or 100Mbps?

;)

Have you tried disabling your nework device then enabling it?

Also, update your drivers.

I was going to suggest the internal wiring in your house but if you've connected the laptop and get 1gig then it's probably not.

I dont really understand your description of the network but I assume that at one end of the wire is the PC and at the other end is a switch.

It is most likely going to be your network interface on the PC. What are you using? If its just the onboard one what motherboard is it? Like swifty55 said it might be worth updating the drivers.

Uhh yeah. The issue's with the PC, which won't connect at GigE. I'm suggesting using the cable the PC uses (which the OP suspects is at fault) with the laptop, which evidently works fine.
If you want to be anal, I could've said "the same cable as the PC". The OP didn't say they'd used the same cable ;)

That's neither here nor there. Even if the PS3 only did 100Mbps it still wouldn't limit the throughput of another device connected to the switch other than to the PS3.

Oh, I wasn't trying to be anal about it, perhaps my smiley wasn't the correct one to use when I quoted you. I do apologise.

Was just pointing it out as I thought you might have misread it. :D

I do agree though, he should test the cable with the laptop to see if connects at GigE.

Hi all,

Sorry for not replying sooner - You go away for a few days and look what happens! :D

Thanks for all the posts, now I'll try to answer all the questions :)

I've also added a Jpeg of my network (see below)...

Right...

I've tried the laptop physically wired to the switch with the cable I have running from the PC to the RJ45 socket (upstairs) and also the cable I use from the RJ45 socket downstrairs both times the laptop connects at 1000MPS.

I've also tried disabling the network connection and trying the second network connection on my mobo (it comes with two).

Hope that provides the answers your looking for if not I'm around all day so will be able to post fairly quickly :-)

Thanks for your help chaps - much appreciated ;)

Also for those who use Visio - Don't worry I've not got two super computers downstairs - I couldn't find suitable images for a PS3 & Blu-ray player :D

unless they sneaked it in, when did the ps3 ever have 1000T-Base?

edit: just looked on wiki, i thought it only had 100T-Base, my bad

have you checked the cable itself between switch and ps3, does it support Cat6 specs?

OP; have you tried the laptop connected like your PC will be?

Laptop > Cable > Sockets > Cable > Switch?

If the laptop connects at full speed then that means the fault is with the PC.

Let me know how it goes.

It sounds like your structured cabling is only 10/100TX (ie only pins 1/2 and 3/6 are connected - this is how my house is wired).

For 1000TX you need pins 1/2, 3/6, 4/5 and 7/8 connected.

Hi all,

Just carried out the Laptop in place of my PC test and it still shows 100mps - So my conclusion is its the wire between the RJ45 sockets (behind the wall), sods law its the one thing I can't actually do myself

Pepp77 think you may be right with this one mate...

I've just run a Realtek Ethernat Diagnostic utility cable test and it shows the following result...

Linkspeed: unlinked

Pair Length (m) Status

1-2 32 Normal
3-6 32 Normal
4-5 13 Open
7-8 32 Normal

Does this mean that I have a break in the cable for Pair 4-5?

Thanks again ;)

Yep looks like you have a break in pairs 4 and 5 13m into the run from where you tested.
