There's a voice that keeps on calling me.
Guys my ipod has been playing up for a while, its 4G 40gb unit, it buggered up on me a while ago as it locked up and when reset all my music was gone, now I load my music up (in disc mode using anapod) and I can see it but cant play it, it just skips the file and on to the next.It also died just showing the sad face icon, but with some vigorous shaking that disappeared!

I have gone into the diagnostic mode and done a HDD scan which comes back ok, but I still have a feeling the HD is buggered. Is there another way of doing a check on the disc? How do I go about replacing it, is it hard? Also can I replace the 40gb with a 60gb one?

Cheers for your help folks!

Don't count me on this but I'm pretty sure you can use Windows chkdsk to scan an iPod...I'm not 100% though, worth a try :D

EDIT: Have you tried updating the software? My 60Gb Video occasionally skips a song for some reason and it's pretty new (few months old) :)

When my ipod started skipping, it deteriorated very quickly from then on. I suggest you back up your music, then format the ipod using the ipod updater. Load your music back onto it and if it doesn't load EVERYTHING back on then it means one of the sectors (or a few) is damaged and will need repairing.

The process of sending your ipod back is easy just go onto the apple website and submit a repair request. They will send a guy from UPS to pick up the unit and arrange for a replacement.

If you know the hard drive is faulty, just replace it yourself. It'll be cheaper than Apple doing it for you. Perhaps replace the battery at the same time as they have a finite life span/number of cycles. Might also want to consider Rockbox if it's in the supported list.
