I was bought a new UMC LCD tv for xmas this year but my lack of HD knowledge has confused me.

Basically I purchased an Xbox 360 and connected it through component. Following the manual, I switched the signal lead to HD because of this and to my suprise it actually displayed. Going into the xbox display settings I was not able to chose anything above 480p without the display messing up. Reading around I hear 480p isn't 'real' HD, but why is it displayed as such in the xbox settings?
I assume component does not necessarily mean HD, and my TV does not have an HDMI connection from what I see.
My question is, as the TV manual mentions nothing of this, is this going to strain my TV in the long run? I know it is nothing special but obviosuly I cannot upgrade after receiving this gift so recently and will probably have to wait for a few years to get a 1080i TV.
On a further point, is it actually possible to geta bove 480p on a 20" screen? cheers.
