I was hoping someone could help me . I currently connecting to the internet via a Belkin F5D7630-4A ADSL modem with built-In wireless router. At the moment one computer is directly connected to it and none are connected to it wirelessly. The modem is fairly old and i've had no noticable problems with it until the last few months (since I upgraded from f2s 2Mb to 8Mb).
The internet almost always connects absolutely fine on start-up but usually within an hour things seem to go wrong and web pages are no longer loading and d/l apps lose connection etc. (and don't ever seem to reconnect until modem is restarted)
I'm a bit confused as to exactly where along the chain the problem lies.
Usually, all the lights (pwr, syn, data) will still be lit but the computer seems to be unable to talk to the modem (ie there is an ip address you can enter into browser to talk directly to modem to alter settingts etc. but this fails to connect and any wireless devices in range show network unavailable), making be think the problem lies at 'this' end not with the isp
occasionally, my computer can talk to the modem which insists the connection is up and running despite the fact nothing seems to be going up or down.
In both cases unplugging and restarting the modem seems to solve the problem. I've ensured i have the most recent firmware and have totally reset the modem to no avail. Things are no better if the modem had been off all night and it doesn't feel particulary hot.
The only things that make me think it might be a problem with the isp are that these problems only started when i upgraded my package and have gotten worse in the last 2 weeks since i moved house, i suppose i need to expect a degree of instability as the new line is tested etc but this is getting ridiculous.
sorry for being long winded but ultimately my questions are:
Is there an easy way to tell if the problem is with the isp, the modem or my computer or possibly a software/set-up problem without any additional hardware?
Does it sound like its the modem thats dead?
(hope not can't really afford a new one while saving for my conroe
to replace my laptop that has now died)
thanks in advance
