hey guys,

i currently have a second hand 24" DELL monitor, i love it but I'm not sure if its holding me back a little bit for gaming?

it has a 12ms response time and I'm not sure on refresh or that, but i do believe its a 2005 model

I'm looking at a samsung 24" LS24D590 monitor.

will this help me out in games or should my current one be fine?

BTW its using DVI for my connection to the graphics card.

If it's a 2407 then yes, absolutely, it will be affecting your gaming significantly. I actually cannot play games like Counterstrike on my old one, it was that bad. I came from a CRT with a - typically for crts - almost non-existent input lag and response time. The difference between that and my 2407 was like night and day. I have since got a 120hz, low input lag Samsung and the difference, again, is like night and day.

It's not just the the pixel response time that's affecting you, but also the input lag that the panel introduces. Have a google around for the input lag numbers for the monitor you have, you'll probably be surprised.

If you play a lot of fps games you may want to consider a Freesync TN 120/144Hz refresh rate. Or even a 60-75Hz Freesync if the former are too expensive. The Samsung's PLS screen will probably look nicer though, at the expense of no Freesync for your AMD card and therefore less smoothness in some instances of some games, or high refresh rate (might be able to get it to 75Hz or so), and a bit more input lag.

If your focus is performance not looks then it's a no-brainer. If you don't want to sacrifice looks, then a PLS or IPS is the choice.
