Is my new R9 390 faulty?

Hi,

My trusty old HD7850 gave up the ghost the other day so I replaced it with this :

Radeon R9 390 "DD Black Edition" 8192MB GDDR5

Much excited I ran Dying Light on full everything and boom, crashed with out of system memory error (I have 8GB). I had to turn the graphics options down lower than I used to have them with the old card to get it to run stable.

Same story with GTA V.

The PSU I have is a Coolermaster 650W so I have today purchased the XFX 1050W just in case.

Do you think it may be the power? Or could it be that the card is faulty? Or the system memory (8GB not enough!?)?

Thanks.

Bob.

HI,

Nope :). Basic Windows 10 installation. Everything cool with the old card, nothing changed (except a driver re-installation) when I put in the new card.

Well windows does size the pagefile dynamically if left at default so have you got enough space on (presumably) your c: drive for it to grow? I'm just guessing but I could imagine the pagefile being used a lot when loading higher quality textures etc.

I'm doubtful about it being a GPU fault with the error message you reported???

edit: I suppose you could install MSI afterburner and get that to report all the VRAM/RAM/pagefile usage on screen.

I had the same issue and it was to do with my page file being set to a specifically low file size. This was down to me trying to save as much space on my SSD as possible. Big mistake.

Have you ran any SSD type optimization software to maximize drive space?

Yep, I'm running Samsung Magician and have it set to maximise reliability.

I have 70GB of free space on the SSD (Samsung Evo 840).

Edit : marc2003 - will do after I'm back from taking car to garage :(

I have Samsung Magician installed but don't actually use it as such. Looking at the max reliability page shows exactly the cause of your problem...

Yep, I noticed it just before I went to the garage and changed the pagefile back to dynamic and shut down. Just got back and am going to boot and try it.

Edit : Changed the pagefile to dynamic and re-tried GTA V. It lasted longer before eventually crashing. This time the error said "failed initializing" or something like that. Going to do some more tests.

Edit 2 : Completely disabling Samsung Magician seems to have sorted it (GTA V ran for a lot longer and hasn't crashed yet). So it would seem that I DID do something stupid like disabling the paging file :/ . I'll do a lot more testing but would like to thank everyone for their time posting replies and helping out.

Well we all have our pebkac moments...as long as you can identify the problems and resolve them, that's all that matter :p Hope that resolve your issue for good...fingers-cross.

It's far more annoying don't have a single clue where the problem lies, and have to resort to reinstalling OS from fresh etc.

its good that your problem is sorted. its a worrying feeling when an application starts messing around after you have installed a new shiny kit of hardware and your all suspicion is focused on finding whats wrong with your new hardware :)

Samsung Magician is setting the virtual memory to a max of 1GB as per marc20003's post.

Maybe you can edit the option in the Advanced tab?

Well, I've only tried GTA V and Dyling Light, both for only about 20 mins each (would die after 3-4 mins previously). I have both games set to 1920x1080 (best my monitor will do) with everything on max./ultra and they both run smooth as silk :).

Will leave Samsung Magician off for now but may go back to it later and tweak.
