Is my processor over heating?

I built my new rig last night and I'm not sure why the processor is over heating. Base temp was around 60c but went up to 73c when I tried playing battlefield3. Thats way too high for my processor isn't it?

I have AMD FX-6100 six core processor with the standard CPU fan attached. I think when I installed it i accidentally rubbed the top side of it with my fingers... Is it possible that I've rubbed off the thermal paste? I do have a tube of paste so thinking about reapplying some.

Can anyone help before I fry my processor please! Thanks

If there is any doubt about your TIM then remove the CPU & use something like AS5 & re apply the TIM & reseat the CPU.
60c @ idle is far to high in my opinion.

i agree with 4T5, but i would also advise getting a new cooler as it should give a much bigger temperture difference to reseating the stock one. It will also allow for much better overclocking should you want to go down that route.

Are you going to be overclocking? if yes, then if you can stretch to an extra £10 then get the Gelid Tranquillo.
Its better imo http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-001-GD&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

If not overclocking, then the one you suggested will be fine.

I am not familiar with your cpu, but isn't 40.C still a little high at idle?
my Q6600 overclocked to 3.4 idles around 30.C and that is a cpu renowned for being hot.

What is your ambient (room) temp?
Are you sure you applied the thermal paste right? As too little or too much can affect the temps.
Also once the cooler is pushed down onto the cpu, you should never relift it, before bolting it down, as that will cause air bubbles.

edit.
you did remove all the old paste first before adding the new paste? if not then you done it wrong, you should always remove the old paste, then apply paste. imo
