Hi,

Got off the phone to sony this afternoon after complaining about my ps3 being constantly in the top phase of cooling (fan test phase) and being far to loud to use

They told me that is is normal (yeah right) and that if it was still playing games then there was no fault, and told me that is was my shelf vibrating that was making all the noise(lol)

So i kicked up a fuss and the guy on the phone got a manager to phone me back, he did and said there is basically nothing i can do,

I have my PS3 on a shelf (i took my 360 and sub off the shelf to give it breathing space,) i just put in the sweeney todd blu-ray and after 10 mins it kicks in again, i have full 5.1 surround sound and the noise is still unbearable

Is there any hope in me getting this fixed as it is really making me hate my otherwise pretty good ps3

It's faulty, no two ways about it. If it's less than a year old then return it to the shop that you bought it at. If it is out of warranty then you options are somewhat limited, though Sony are usually good with this sort of thing, so maybe try phone them again and speak to someone else.

I have had it around 4-5 months, i really can't turn it on at night as it wakes the girlfriend up, just tried streaming a tv show from my pc and it kicked in again,
There really isn't anything i can do without it kicking in on full

Take it back to the shop where you bought it from and offer to demo it to them so they can see how loud it is.

I would ask for a replcement if it were me.

Completely unnacceptable; you are very disatisfied with the quality of the product etc; maybe even say that you swapped your 360 for a PS3 because you thought 360 was loud; also say that no other PS3s youve heard sound nearly as loud.

Basically keep nagging.

Sorry for poor grammar

The thermostat has to be on the way out... PS3's are generally very quiet.. Especially on the dash.. Playing a game on my original 60gig after about 15mins a fan kicks in.. On my 40gig I can't ever get it to be louder than silent, no matter what I throw at it...

Mine kicks in full pelt from time to time, it's strangely happening less than it used to. Why not tell Sony that games have started to crash from time to time?

Lie to get what you want :)

My fan has 3 levels. On the XMB it is near silent at all times. In games it steps up a gear but if the game is making any sound I can't hear it (ie can only hear it if TV is on mute). If it's a hot day or sometimes if the PS3 has been on several hours (though not when folding strangely) it sometimes goes into the third level. This I can hear over things, but only just. I can't hear it over the music in most games.

If the fan goes to full at ANY time during use then there is something wrong with your console. They should not get hot enough to warrant the fan being on full. I guess by full you don't know what full actually is though, because on full it sounds, quite literally, like a hair dryer. If you have a 40GB PS3 you can hear this by hard switching it off, holding the eject button then flipping the switch on again.

Just ran through 36 holes on everybody's golf and my new ps3 didn't get to the top phase (fan test phase) so im hoping this one stays this way

My old one would always kick in around the 4th hole, so good news so far, it did speed up a bit but nowhere near as loud as the old one,

It's a refreshing change being to play while the GF sleeps

I don't think the fans can ever go to full for cooling, that's purely for a fan test/cleaning cycle isn't it?

It certainly goes louder than acceptable though.

Small update,

Had my new console over a week now and it hasn't gone into the top phase once,

i played MGS for over 3 hours yesterday, if that doesn't make it spin up then i don't think anything will,

It is amazing how much of a difference it makes, i actually use my ps3 now, before i just turned it off as soon as it kicked in, it was about twice as loud as an old 360,

So, back to more MGS, and a new found love for the PS3
