Will just list what has gone wrong lately:

Refuses to turn off sometimes - Requires Hard Shutdown
Has froze during games
Has lost connection to Wi-Fi despite everything else being fine
Has ejected disc mid-game saying "Disc Read Error"
Has become pretty noisy
Has had to rebuild database several times

60GB version.

Will Sony replace it straight away? Will they replace it with 60GB? I don't have the reciept but if I took it back to where I bought it, would they replace it with a 40gb?

If it's still within warranty, Sony will swap it next day without a problem. Even if it's out of warranty, they'll probably still swap it.

Taking it back to the retailer is a bad plan, as they won't swap it for a 60, but you might end up with an 80 (which may be better for you if you don't use the BC or SACD).

Phone Sony and they will replace it within a couple of days for another 60GB.

Fraid so mate, Sony have been known to repair 60gigs for free outside of their warranty so certainly see if you can wangle it.

Good Luck!

It's well within warranty I think. Will the retailer replace without receipt?

Possibley but already stated you won't get a direct replacement, i.e. 60GB. Whereas phoning Sony you'll get a direct replacement delivered to your door within a couple of days....

Obviously if want a 80GB then go to the retailer and see what they say, but if not go direct to Sony as the service is superb and generally very fast.

The retailer probably won't replace without a receipt and you most certainly won't recieve a 60gig in return as they are out of production.

Sony do their warranties according to the serial number next to the barcode on the console and they will replace your console with a 60gig at your doorstep.

As previously stated, contact Sony for a replacement.

Called Sony and they coming with a new one on Friday.

Absolutely perfect as it's the only day I'm off. :p

Now, how do I backup the hard drive and my PlayTV recordings?

Wow, that's some good customer service. And I thought MS's was good!

Literally took 5 mins on the phone. Impressed to say the least.

As it's a 60GB I'll be receiving a refurbed 60gb

(Normally I would hate calling any Customer Service but now that I too am just a voice behind a phone, I sort of enjoyed being the one giving the problem again. :p)

Sony tend to be quite nice if your console dies JUST outside of the warranty, especially if you own a 60gig. I've heard of people getting free repairs 2 months after it has expired.

Mine was 4 months out of warranty and they replaced it no quibbles :)
