i just reseated a coolit eco alc to my q6600 as my temps were to hot,
now the pc wont post,
i checked the back of the q6600 and wiped some artic silver off, in doing so it also wiped a few of the small gold blobs of the back of the cpu, will this be why it wont post,

You should have been ok touching the gold contacts, what does the system do on startup?

Also might be worth trying a CMOS reset.

Was the thermal paste in contact with the cpu when you installed it in it's socket? If you were using arctic silver, which is conductive. You may have damaged the cpu.

How did you manage to wipe the contacts off the cpu? what did you use? sandpaper?! If you have indeed removed the contacts off the cpu, then yes.. its likely you damaged it.

yes theres a small bald patch where a few of the gold blobs have come of ,there not pins

The pins are in the socket.

The gold "blobs" make contact with the pins.

As you've somehow managed to remove some of the contacts the processor has likely had it

Answered your question from a different forums just now. Well as below:

I've done it as well on my Q6600. Just make sure you clean it well and make sure there is no residue of the thermal paste. Mine booted fine after that.

It would also help if you could post a pic of the CPU.

Just re-read your opening post, did not take in the fact the gold contacts had completely gone

You probaby got Arctic Siver on the contacts and when you started the PC they shorted and burnt out.

When you wiped the Arctic Siver away the residue of the contacts came with it.

A lesson never to use Arctic Silver.

AS is not conductive and hasn't been for a long while. Its slightly capacitive but not in my experience enough to cause any problems whatsoever. As for the Q6600.. its likely dead, i've never managed to take off the landing pads of a cpu..amazing.

It seems to have done enough to damage the OP's CPU.

It could easily have been cold joints or abrasive removal that took out the pads.. with so many LGA cpus and so many AS users i doubt this is an issue.
