Is my router broke?

Every now and then I get disconnected from the net, the ADSL light will go off, then it will go back to orange and connect to the net again.

Sometimes it will also popup on the computers that a network cable has been unpluged, then it will sort it self out within a few seconds.

When I get disconnected from the net, sometimes i'm reconnected within seconds, other times it has taken upto an hour to connect.

My upstream is all over the place! I get ranged from 30 kbps to 380 kbps, most of the time is realy low ( highest today has been 120 kbps )

The reason i'm thinking it's my router is, I was having loades of bother like this so I changed my ISP, i'm now on my new ISP and it's still like this...

Does this sound like a router fault, BT line, exchange problems? Should I give BT a ring, or send my ISP an e-mail or buy a new router. I dont have another router to try out, so i'd have to buy a new one :\

it will be your connection dropping out, It then auto restarts the router. Thats why it will say its disconnected. Make sure you have all the right connection info in the router!

Hope that helps

Phil

Thanks Phil !

I'ce checked my ISP's website for the settings I should have in my router, and they all seem to be correct. I've just been reading up on the problem, and i'm going to try a BT test login to see if the problem is at my BT's end or my ISP's.

The BT speed test won't help if the modem's losing synch, though any decent router shouldn't restart itself just because it's lost the ADSL connection...

If your router gives them, attenuation, SNR margin and the speed it's connected at would be useful. If it doesn't give them, get one that does.

ADSL Link..................Downstream......Upstream
Connection Speed.........8128 kbps..........448 kbps
Line Attenuation.............39 db..............21 db
Noise Margin..................4 db................21 db

I think thats what you wanted? btw is the lower the db number the better? or higher the number the better? And what should they be, whats good?

I'm also not getting those down and up speeds.

My actual downstream is from 700 - 1930 kbps
And my Upstream is from 20 - 380 kbps.... 80% of the time it's about 20 kbps lol :( Sending a song over msn takes about 7 months, but i disconnect every 20 mins, so that aint gonna happen.

With attenuation, lower is better and with SNR margin, higher is better (for a given sync rate).

The SNR margin's not great, and the low speeds are probably the result of your connection dropping and then reconnecting at a lower speed (leaving you with a reduced IP profile) combined with packet loss. The BT speedtest should confirm the reduced IP profile.

Yeah I am getting realy bad packet loss, somthing like 10 - 20% is lost. It can go fine for a few mins, then a few seconds of heavy packet loss.

Is this because i'm still on the " 10 day line test " when moving over to MAX? Because I don't think it should be this bad, it's been 8 days..

Like my speed test results?

LoadsaMoney, those speeds are great!

I've hit 370 upstream only once, i've had below 100 kbps for the last 3 days.

Was your connection this bad while you were on the 10 day line test? I know it can't be enta / UKFSN because every single person with them has great things to say.

..Wounder if i've bashed a nail threw my phone cable or somthing
