Is my Samsung dying?

I've got a Samsung LE26R88BD that appears to be dying.

I get the following wonderful scrambled colours on screen after turning the tv on after it's been on standby for several hours (ie over night or while I have been out at work):

After ~30 seconds the picture will show as normal and it is fine if I put it into standby and back on after that. It's as if it is 'warming up' and the problem is only apparent after a 'cold boot'.

I wanted an excuse to get a new 32" but I was planning to pass on this tv in the family. If this problem can be fixed without costing the earth then I will get it repaired. If it’s not worth the money then I will still pass it on but only for as long as it lives.

Doesn't it suck a lot of juice if you leave it on standby all night or have modern tvs solved that?

My Samsung that I bought this year doesn't even get warm even after being on for hours. His TV looks like it's similar to my monitor (in design at least) and my monitor gets pretty hot after a while.

It's only recently (within the last few months) started to do this. I have had (for as long as I can remember) a Sky HD and Xbox 360 box plugged into each of the 2 HDMI ports and (until last week) a SCART cable also between the Sky HD box and the TV.

There are no other devices connected.

The scrambled screen is present even when starting up on the Freeview tuner so it's not specific to either HDMI connections.

Has it got a USB port by which you can run a firmware update from a USB drive? I had a TV which had a few corruption issues in certain modes until I ran an update.

You sure it's not your cable? Mine tends to do that.

I'm pretty sure but I will test out that theory tonight before I go to sleep by un-plugging both the HDMI connections.

No USB connection - just the RS232 port (serial). I've just done a Reset through the service menu. Again, I won't find out if it made any difference until tomorrow after it's been off over night.

How old is it ?

I can't remember when I bought it but it must be around 2008.

If it's getting on a bit the capacitors could be failing which explains why it starts working after it's warmed up as their resistance falls as they heat up.

But first, try different leads.

My thoughts exactly.
Samsung TVs are renowned for using cheap, dodgy Cap's which cause them to fail fairly easily. replacing the failed capacitors is a fairly simple project and very affordable to boot.

Yep, could be power board issue. I have a monitor which throws a fit like yours when the screen resolution changes to a low res i.e. when loading a game menu. If fixes itself once it goes back to a higher res. Been like it for several years and has never got worse.

Looks to me like the BGA on the main board is on it's way out. New main board I'm afraid unless you have access to a BGA machine.
