Hi,

I currently have a Q9550 @ 4Ghz, an overclocked GTX280 and 4gb of ram.

This PC is mainly a gaming machine and I game at 1680 x 1050 on a 22" monitor.

I am undecided whether to sell my monitor and get a 24" 1900 x 1200 monitor or just keep this one. I am looking more in respect of future proof. I know at my res my pc will be able to play a lot of the latest games coming out and will do for some time. However, if I increase the res then this time framewill shorten.

Well, if you consider that an 8800GTX was probably overkill for 1680 x 1050 then yes, your system is OTT for your current monitor. You might want to think about why you are changing - do you want the xtra detail? If so, then the decision is a no-brainer, get the bigger monitor. If you want high frame-rates then you'll still get them with your system, just not as high as you'll get at a lower resolution. Most games don't automatically play at the maximum resolution anyway - you can always scale the image back a little if the frame rates drop too much.

I wouldn't think of it as future-proofing, think of it as an upgrade and one that you either need or you don't need. Good games don't need fabulous graphics - they need good playability. Luckily for you, your system allows you to have both.
