Is my system worth upgrading?

Ok, here's the scoop. I'm a fussy gamer and i like my stuff to look all shiney and smooth, however the release of the Crysis demo has finally knocked my faithful 7800GTX to its knees. Being the impatient, materialistic man i am, i want it to run better.

The utterly awesome pricing of the 8800GT that has just appeared on Overclockers has made me want to buy one, fast. However, i worry that my CPU will just bottleneck the beastie to the point where it's not worth me buying it.

I'm currently running a opteron 175 @ 2.75 ghz, is this too slow to warrant such an upgrade?

Nah, I think that'd be a very nice upgrade.

Seconded!!

Earlier in the summer I bought a 8800 for my s939 X2 4800 (@ stock). At the time I was tempted to upgrade the whole PC but managed to resist. Having read a few things about bottlecking I wasn't sure how much of a difference I'd see.

I needn't have worried.

I got a pleasant surprise with a very playable Bioshock (1600*1200) and have just had another one with the Crysis demo which cracks along at the same resolution at between 35-55 FPS (DX9, No AA, mix of medium and high settings). Ok, not the fastest maybe but fine for me.

Now I think I can hold on a bit longer until games really do need 4 x powerful cores to perform acceptably.
