for a while now I have had to flip my bread in toaster for it to do both sides evenly - Now just lately it seems to be drying the bread out - Today I turned it on without bread in it and only a few of the elements turned dull red - Does that mean it's shot. - If so can anyone recommend a 2 slice toaster that works and toasts both side without turning the bread.

Dull red means it's heating up surely? Or did it used to glow orange/white?

Elements have probably gone, one then the other. Is it a sensible brand? Dualit sell loads of spares, some others do via e.g. www.espares.com.

Try and fix it :)

Have you considered using the grill? The extended distance between heating element and bread allows for much greater air flow. Not only does this give a far more even toasting, but also reduces cancer risks.

Or just buy the cheapest one you can find from Argos?

I don't think I have used a grill for toast for 40 years - just used to a toaster.

Yes as my original post says I want to buy a new one and I did ask if anyone could recommend one. No good just walking into a shop and buying a load of rubbish but thanks for the tip.

I have a Kenwood Kmax at the moment.

Humnmm let me see now, the tesco value one that have is 3 years old still working and cooks toats just fine, but if I was you I would spend 3x more money and buy a brand name one.....

I totally agree that a tesco one will probably last as long if not longer than my Dualit, however at a certain point it's about it looking nice in the kitchen. Yes, it is totally superficial, but what's wrong with that from time to time?

How many people did you need to help buy it?

lolwut?

A toaster costs like £5 out of B&M.

buy a new one. my wife bought a toaster for £100 once. I broke it after 2 months and basically i proved to her it was a waste of money so she returned it. all i did was hit one of the elements with a knife whilst trying to get something out that was short. never had that happen with other toasters.

so next toaster we bought was cheapest in B&M - still working after 3 years and cost peanuts. does the exact same job as the £100 one.

I recall a thread in here where someone compared about 15 toasters to check for evenness of toasting. Maybe have a look?

Dualit. Only uses about 3 parts and they're all available as spares. Even better, they haven't changed the design since the 50s/60s so you can buy used ones cheap.

You'll never buy another toaster.

I’d have thought someone of your calibre wouldn’t have been that foolish ;)

I doubt you will find a toaster that both works and toasts both sides the bread!

I've got a Breville that heats the bread and then two Morphy Richards, one to toast each side!

Works a treat and I don't think there is a better all in one solution!

Just bought a toasting fork - only problem is I will have to wait till winter and log burner is going.

Seriously i think i am just going to buy a £20 Russell Hobs cream toaster to match the kettle - if it toasts ok that will be a bonus.

Best way to toast bread - On a fork with an open fire.

Mrs bought me a fancy Toaster that cooks eggs as well (boil/poach/fry).

to be honest it was quite good at doing the eggs, but it never get used for that any more
