Is my wireless router on the way out?

Hey guys,

I've got a netgear dg834g v2 which I've had now for a few years and it's been fantastic. Apart from re-syncing two or three times a day because of my crappy line (not the hardware's fault) everything has been perfect ;)

However, the last couple of days have been a nightmare! The wireless on the router appears to be failing… Basically, all the things (mobiles/laptops) that used to be able connect instantly; now need a lot of encouragement.

I need to do 'repairs' in vista, enable/disable in xp on my connections – and even that doesn’t always ensure a solution :o

The latest victim is my mobile, which usually connects within seconds, now doesn't seem to want to connect at all! Today I rebooted the router, pulled the plug on it (completely wrecking my max profile in the process) and even tried manually enabling/disabling the wireless setting on the router itself. Eventually I managed to get my phone to connect

Apart from replacing the hardware, is there anything else I can try?

Cheers,

SW.

Hmmm, I got called out to look at one of those yesterday, it's wireless range was pathetic and even stood right next to it my laptop was getting stronger signals from two of the clients neighbours routers.

As mentioned, try going through the whole channel range (01 to 13), giving each a suitable duration to test stability.

Also have you checked ariel is screw fixed fully? As I know mine has loosened in the past.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I tried channel 9 this afternoon and that seemed to fix everything straight away? I had been on channel 11 - the default setting.

All my laptops, 2nd wireless desktop and mobile connected fine again with no problems ;)

Then, when I got in tonight, I went to check my mail on my phone and nothing... Turned on my laptop; the same. A quick router reboot cured it, still using channel 9, but for how long

I'll check again in the morning.

Thanks.

SW.

PS. I meant to say in my op, there seems to be a new network showing up within my adaptors range? A bt home hub. We live in the country side, so I assume it's our elderly 'next' door neighbours. The signal is weak, but I can still connect? Maybe this new network is interfering with mine, although usually changing your channel fixes things doesn't it?

yes, the default channel tends to be 11

so try another channel often fixes it

if you think of it as instruments all striking the same note, they all sound the same, if you drop a note or two, it's easier to distinguish the instruments :D

Great analogy mate ;)

Tried to connect this morning from my mobile and laptop and nothing... I've since changed the channel to 10 which has fixed things for now.

A bit annoying that I've been trouble free for so long and then this happens :(
