is my xbox dead?

Right there i was happily watching a DVD, and then it froze. Xbox was responding but dvd drive was just ticking. Have turned it on and off repeatedly, still when it tried to read a disc it just ticks and goes through the motions and nothing

I've had 2 drives fail. I decided to have a go at fixing the second one for myself which I managed to do quite easily. Although it sounds like a different problem to yours.

What kind of sound does the drive make when trying to read?

just ticking, the drive spins up then ticks, then spins up then ticks and so on.......
