Is Nuke Evolution old and outdated or still fit for purpose to create a half decent Clan gaming site

I've taken on the task of re-vamping our clans website which is pretty old and dated.

It's currently using Nuke Evolution and I've been slowly modifying some of the image files from a given theme in an attempt to freshen it up without having to buy a new premium theme like this.

Does anyone know if Nuke Evo is still popular or are there better alternatives out there at the moment?

One alternative I've found is a site using http://www.simplemachines.org/

Which seems to be similar and allows installation of modules like shoutboxes an stuff. Anyone got experience with it?

My clan uses vbadvanced and it's great. It's free, but you do need a valid vbulletin license, which isn't free.
