Hi guys,

I hvae just bought a graphics card for the n54l, its running xbmc great connected to a tv. However i want to install xbmc on one of thr vm's and output that via the graphics card permanantly. The. Just rsp into the machine to use other vm's and or the machine its self. Is it possible to do this ? Basically i need the gpu to ignore the actual pc and just worry about one of the vm's.

I guess i better order a Gen8 then, Will the Celeron one do the trick ? i will update the CPU to a xenon at some point however day 1 the celeron version makes financial sense if im going to buy one.

No, you will need VT-d which the Xeons support, E3-1220lv2 and E3-1265lv2 are the common ones. Even then it might not work depending on vmware and the card. Also remember it's going to have to be quite low power.

I have the Gen8 and anything with passthrough can be an expensive risk, microserver or other hardware.

Just buy another microserver. 1 for media and 1 for virtualisation. Depending on how strenuous your xbmc is you could go for a pi2 for xbmc then repurpose the hp.

Cheers guys, i ran xbmc on a pi and it was so slow. I might treat myself to a gen 8 any way. I just wanted to consolidate as much as possible into one box, asking too much i think. I have a HD6450 in my n54L and that works a treat. Its on the tv and the mrs even plays some simple games on it at times and it runs really quite well. I am just askinn too much of it i think.
