Is Plex still a thing?

Blargh, just finally sorted my media after years and had added music for the first time. With the intention to use remote for that.
On the one hand the pass is not mega expensive, on the other, i've invited someone to access the server in the house and ended up in some weird IOS deathloop. Eventually signed in, but obviously they cannot see the server.

Think that will be the deal breaker for me if I cannot sort it.

"Going forward, you’ll need a Plex Pass, or our newest subscription offering, Remote Watch Pass, to stream personal media remotely." Is plex useless now ? what are the alternatives ?
Emby, or the fork from Emby which is Jellyfin.

I moved from Plex as soon as they started adding in their own movies, I know I you can hide them. Never regretted it once.

I now also use jellyseer, sonarr and radarr. Perfect combination.

I use jellyfin almost exclusively, with the kodi add on for my home media centres. I access it through mobile via a wireguard vpn or tailscale, although reverse proxy works too (prefer the security of a vpn). The transcoding, I have found, is far more reliable than plex and just works.

Having said all of that, the convenience of having plex available on pretty much any device/platform means that I rely on it when using a remote device which doesn't belong to me and wanting to access my home media. With jellyfin, the app is harder to setup and not something you can do within a few mins.

which is better Emby or Jellyfin. I did try ember years ago around the same time as plex but it felt unfinshed. I jellyfin more modern, does jellyfin have a app for samsung yet, also what is jellyseer ?

do you add kodi add to jellyfin or the rother way around ? you hit the nail "Having plex available on pretty much any device/platform " which is why i never switched. I assume i can still use plex at home but when im out I wont be able to use it.

Emby is the Official product, they were using an open siurce licence a few years back, so Jellyfin forked the git and created their own version of it.
I honestly haven't used it, so I don't know if the official emby apps can access it, I presume they would be able to.

Jellyseer allows people to request stuff.

Still no support for Samsung ? but both Plex and Emby offer this. other than the samsung support issues, which one is better at this point in time and why ?

Seems like Plex has had an update (on iOS at least), the app on my iPhone and iPad updated and told me I needed to update the server app. All done now, but they seem to have royally screwed it up, a mix of missing stuff, things that have been made worse and things just not working. The number of 1-star reviews now appearing suggests I'm not alone in this!

A few things I've noticed:

The PVR Schedule list is gone
TV Guide only shows half an hour on screen at a time (even in landscape mode on a wide iPad)
The TV Guide can only be clicked forward half an hour at a time, you can't swipe to scroll
Favourites TV Guide only fills the bottom half of the screen, so only fits about 4 channels at once
The TV Guide is incredibly slow to load
Skipping forward to a future day in the TV Guide fails to load at all, you can only see the current day
Live TV now just shows an error about server processor speed for me (sounds like it's now trying to transcode whereas before it just played directly)

Also various other layout changes and things like that, that are annoying but may just take some getting used to, but the stuff around the TV guide makes it almost unusable!

Anyone else encountered this, found any fixes? (Potentially installing a different system is a fix, but obviously that's a bit of a hassle). The PVR stuff is what I used Plex for most, so annoying that it seems to have been really messed up.

Can I assume you're both paid up Plex users or is this some stuff they've done to annoy those still using the free tier?
Plex Pass here, it's just the iOS UI looks to have been changed for the worse.

*edit* I'm not a huge Live TV user, I mainly use it when abroad to avoid iPlayer geo restrictions.

I find Kodi to be the best media centre. It has the best in-built video player.

I appreciate that’s not an option on iOS, tvOS etc. The side loaded version is rubbish.

But I’d opt for Infuse with jellyfin on an Apple device.

I second Infuse. It’s a great app. I use it on my Apple TV paired to a Plex backend. Infuse is great for playing 4K HDR Atmos enabled shows

I just wish the Apple TV supported passthrough for TrueHD, dts etc.

It would be the perfect streaming device!

I placed an order for a Vero V which should come in the next couple of days. Hoping that’s good…
