Is Plex still a thing?

I think the IOS plex client is perfectly fine, but I’ve only played with it a bit as I don’t do a lot of travel.

It definitely feels they want to price out of market. I’ve got lifetime, not even sure anymore what extra it gives me. I think I got it moons ago partly for some reason around transcoding I think as I run a server for family, and partly to support them as I’ve used it regularly for a very long time now

Thanks for all the replies but no ones answered my question  I'm thinking the Infuse player is the way forward and then the monthly sub for a month if they ever close the remote play loophole and I need it when travelling? Or is the Plex Client good when you have premium?
For remote play you can just use a VPN. If I use Tailscale and a local box as an exit node Plex identifies it as a LAN client. If I disable Tailscale, it shows as WAN.

I use the Infuse client on my Apple TV with a lifetime Plex subscription. The Plex subscription allows others to access my Plex server, something that you don’t mention so maybe isn’t important to you. I initially got Infuse as it handled HDR and Atmos better than Plex which may still be the case. It’s a great app and so good that I went from a subscription to lifetime purchase after a year. I prefer the Infuse GUI to that of Plex too so it’s all gravy for me.

To answer your question, if you’re just using Apple hardware then Infuse is a good buy. And you won’t be restricted to a Plex backend as it can read network shares, Jellyfin and Emby.

Jellyfin is another good alternative, not sure if it’s been mentioned. I used it for a few weeks, not polished as Plex but not far off.
Luckily bought Plex’s lifetime pass a few years ago for about £50, still is my go to.

Definitely has its downfalls, but been using jellyfin for a few months now. Currently watching a 22gb movie remotely with zero issues. Albeit using tailscale but it's working fine and transcoding just grand.

I’m sure that’s going to put people off getting Plex. I have a lifetime pass from ages ago, I can’t remember how much I paid, but that’s a crazy jump in price.
Plex Pass is £4.99 per month. I honestly don't know why people grudge paying the price of a cup of coffee for a service like this that they use daily.

I fully agree, the convenience of it is excellent for people, and how it works on so many different platforms.

I'm glad I bought lifetime when I did, already paid for itself vs the annual I was paying.

Plex are clearly taking the stance that they really dont want people on lifetime subs any more.

I bet they will discontinue the lifetime membership at some point.

Then create a bunch of subscription models like they all do in the end slowly increasing them overtime.

Something is telling me they do a rug pull in the future with lifetime membership. "If you want xyz new features then you need to go subscription base"

Just like Microsoft did with Office overtime.
I'm expecting this too.
The only reason I ever bought a lifetime pass was because they removed features that used to be free, such as hardware transcoding. I probably used the free version for 10 years before that.
I don't recall hardware transcoding ever being free on Plex. Streaming remotely however, was something they removed.
