Is Plex still a thing?

Any way to get a cheap lifetime pass?
TBH, I thought they'd gone the way of the dodo since they removed remote access and increased the price. If I'm honest I'd look to Jellyfin first and see how you get on, unless there's specifically something Plex does that you want. I've got both running side by side, I think my Plex pass purchase was mostly due to FOMO, but if I'm watching something I'll do it via Jellyfin.

Doesn’t seem to be a way to get Jellyfin in Kodi that isn’t using the awful native Kodi UI. There’s a Plex app that you run instead.

Yea that's correct about Kodi + JF AFAIK. What are you running it on that doesn't have a JF app? I'd add that my experience on my firestick with the native Plex app is worse than the Plex extension that you can run in Kodi (not the add Plex stuff to Kodi Library extension). I've had multiple files where the Plex app will insist on transcoding when it didn't need to, but going via Kodi it all played without transcoding.

Kodi is the only way to get proper uncompressed audio out of most devices it runs on, so you really have to use that.

TIL. I know nothing, so clueless. However I'd add there are some audio settings on my windows client WRT audio, and while I can't see it on the windows client, the android client has the option to open a video in an external player. It's how I play HEVC files on my tablet as MPV works fine, but JF and Plex won't play them fine. So might be worth investigating.

If you're planning on using the Plex plugin for kodi, IIRC I saw mention that they were planning on discontinuing it. Though that was a while back and the plugin still works. *shrugs*

My m1 mac mini has been a workhorse! It has never missed a beat but it is very slow post download.

Nice! My Dell Optiplex with an i7-9700 has been superb too, especially as it's a good few years old now. Runs a few dozen services with ease.

Just came back to the Plex party and realised they started to charge! I've gone with Jellyfin instead.
Yes and potentially no. I was stumbled across a third party client for plex called Plezy. Apparently you can stream remotely with it as the checks are done client side. Seems daft but I wouldn't put it past the plex team. I can't test it as I've got a plex pass, but as an app it seems alright, mostly prefer it to the default one.

Obviously JF is a great choice, I've been using it more and more.

JF over Emby as the Emby team handled the whole fork thing in a highly petty manner, but honestly I still keep running Plex. It's got its limitations, but after what is coming up to two decades next year, they can be worked around or mitigated, and it's a known quantity at this point, and PlexPass back in the day cost bugger all.

Apologies, this isn't strictly a Plex thing as it's occuring if I play the files on VLC too, however: I've got some video files which seem to have some issues with audio channels, they're sending dialogue to the right channel and other audio to the left channel. If I check the Codec information in VLC on any of the files, it says "Decoded channels: Unknown-chan-mask" which I've googled and suggests that VLC (and Plex as the same thing happens there) aren't detecting the audo channel layout properly. Is there any way I can fix this?

I still use Plex daily... (I also run JF too, its coming along, but it's still not completely there yet)

Even though I'm a lifetime Plex Pass holder, I'd voluntarily pay £2pm or some extra token amount to help the continued development.

Plexamp is overdue an update, but it's actually my preferred desktop music app at home and at work..
And remote streaming is great, adding people by just asking for their 4 digit code off their TV/Streaming box and getting them added is how it should be..

Their photo's app died didn't it? I thought it was fairly decent, but since I also run immich, I'm covered in that department, I only keep photo's in plex for those would don't like too many apps in the family.
