SO I bought a component cable for my ps2 as I read it was better than standard connector.

I now see you can buy VGA

so what is better VGA or component?

Either or really, both are analogue rather than digital signals. 98% of ps2 games will only run at a max of 480p/576i anyway. A handful will run upto 1080i though they may need an alternate bootdisc/mod to force the console to display at the resolution you desire. Even then its no major visual improvement as most of the games are already written to display at 480/576

Really depends on if you are using a TV or monitor.

I find VGA gives the best image quality consistently especially on a monitor (Which is kind of obvious) or sometimes a TV that has that input, as component cables can be a hit or miss either way.

I bought a cheap component cable years ago to try it out on a 52" Sony Bravia LCD TV only to find that it made the image pixelated as if it was like some low-res PSOne game. Tested it out with every game that I had just to make sure. Since it ended up being a duff cable, I forked out for the official Sony one and it worked out brilliantly in the end.

I prefer using component since I use the PS2 on a TV and it also makes the audio connections easier. Don't have to faff about with other cables/connections when using VGA.

Is your current component cable working fine? Otherwise you don't have to worry about it.

And the cable is compatible between PS2 and PS3 either way since both consoles use the same analogue A/V output connection type.

well it works. It does seem better than the original connection but its not amazing.

You can't use VGA with PS2 can you? All I remember when I was looking into a better PS2 A/V connection for my HDTV was that VGA only worked with Linux on PS2.

I see there are 3rd party kits available which apparently let you use the VGA cable, but they are limited on which games actually play (the list has less then 60 games).
