Is Q6600 processor 64 bit OS friendly?

I have a Q6600 processor on an Asrock 4core 1333-Viiv motherboard with 8 gig of memory.

I have tried running 64 bit s/w, both Xp pro 64 and Vista ulimate 64 bit.

Both run painfully slow as if something is causing a conflict, but there are no obvious conflicts. I have the very latest bios on the mobo. (1.60)

If I run a 32 bit OS, (XP Home) it runs like lightning.

What could be the problem?

I really want to make full use of my 8 gig, or it has been a waste of money.

By the way, the OS s/w is genuine, not pirated.

When you're running either OS, do you install the latest drivers for everything? Including chipset etc?

And to answer your original question, yes, it's 64bit friendly, it's a 64bit processor ;)

Yes, I install all latest drivers via windows update, then use driveragent.com to find and install latest drivers.

I am not 100% sure, but at the moment, I suspect the problem begins when I get to the point of installing the .net framework.

I may be wrong of course!

By the way, when vista 64 bit ultimate is installed, it takes what seems like 10 minutes or so (not timed it) to boot up. It's quicker with xp pro 64 bit, but not as quick as I would expect.

32 bit, boots up fast and runs like a dream.

IMO get the latest drivers direct from the component makers instead, i.e. ASRock, Intel, etc & install them before anything else in particular the chipset (mobo) ones 1st.

I would have said the unknown component is that Asrock motherboard myself, but as said grab the latest drivers, bios and service pack for Vista.

Did you check all the motherboard settings were correct? There's a couple of most motherboards that apply directly to x64 editions of Windows like HPET and another I cannot remember off the top of my head.

never heard of driver agent

find out what chipset it has, and download that from the manufacturer's site (not the motherboard site)

I will have one more attempt at installing XP pro 64 as that is the preferred OS for me.

If it fails again, then I may well buy a different mobo.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have the weekend off, so can spend some time messing around with it.

I've got a Q6600 with 8Gg running Vista Ultimate 64-bit and she's really fast at booting and general usage - as you'd hope. Boots in well under a minute. :D

I think the key is when does it start to slow down. You seem quite happy with changing the OS so stick a clean build of Vista 64-bit on and see.

It is fast when it's clean? It will be a bit quicker when the correct chipset/graphics drivers are installed but not massively so that you would notice on bootup.

If it's still slow, I'd try removing 4Gb RAM ?

Are you suggesting some of the ram could be faulty?

The ram is brand new, purchased with the mobo. I know being brand new does not guarantee that it has no faults.

By the way, I always do a clean install after first reformatting the had drive.

Thanks, I will try that in the morning.

I am currently running memtest86 + V2.10.

I have been running it for 4.hours 23 mnutes now and it has only reached >

Pass 19%
Test 16%

Is it normal for the testing to take this long?

No errors are showing as of yet, but I assume due to the slowness of this test, somethng is very wrong.

Afterthought....... Perhaps I should have mentioned that at the moment, I only have the OS that was on the installation CD on the computer. I have yet to begin windows update. I think it is SP1 XP pro 64.

Decided to stay up for a while and try and sort this out.

I tried to install this file, but got the following error message>

This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software.
Setup will exit.

Maybe because I only have the basic OS with no updates. So I am now installing SP2 and will try again.

Sounds like a problem I had. Turned out the problem was the RAID/AHCI drivers that were causing the problem.

Try these drivers from intel http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...dows+Vista*+64&lang=eng&strOSs=150&submit=Go!

Good luck

tbh i think if your going to go 64bit then you might aswell go vista

i think it is better supported than 64bit xp

also i reckon your problem is probably something to do with the motherboard

I have got as many drivers from the component makers as I can find, but I am still having the slow / sluggish problem.

It is a little better for this install, and is also intermittent.

I think I am going to have to get myself a new mobo.

Any recommendations?

I have a Q6600 processor.
8 gig of Geil DDRII PC6400 ram (4 x 2gb strips)
6 x sata2 drives
Nvidia 9600GT pci express Hybrid Freezer graphics card with 1 gig of memory.
2 x dvd rewriters.

I need at least 3 accessible pci slots and 1 x small pci express slot.

I had a problem with memory a while ago. Sometimes mobo's don't give memory enough volts. Perhaps check the manufacturer's specs and take the memory volts off auto and set it manually. Plus, because you're using all your memory slots you may need to give the controller a bump (.01V or so). Could it be power issues generally - ie is your PSU up to it? You've a lot of kit in there.
