I was talking about case modding today in work with some of the younger staff, was recalling this very forum being packed full of random tips and tricks for modding cases "back when I were a lad we couldn't buy these things off the shelf"

I should try and dig some old photos out, think it was a user called gordeyhand(?) possibly that had a lianli I always wanted at the time, he was a dab band with a Dremel too :p

....cold cathodes, bay busses, even the dawn of, dare I say it, the blue LED

Gordyhand rings a bell :)

I remember the early days of people dremelling windows into cases, etc. The first real mod I saw was a quake team member at I99 literally having a very small domestic radiator bolted to the side of his case for home made watercooling.

I'd not realised before that back then we used to be able to manually control each fans speed but that doesn't really exist much any more.
Twisting a knob to do it is much more fun that via software.

God I had some ugly cases and made them look even worse with cathodes and other nonsense. Maybe that's why I now have a black case and the only rgb is on my gpu that I can't turn off.

I had a lovely fan controller that fitted in one of the spare dvd trays (remember those!) that showed each fans rpm - there was something so ‘meaningful’ twisting the dials to adjust the fan speed.

Yes it's died out along with overclocking sadly I feel.

Overclocking I get, but modding, is it just a lack of need or creativity? Suppose I only started in order to quieten my deltec fan down, get a case window and mess with airflow really.

Some of the case stuff the nerdforge team have done aesthetically is mind-blowing, but in saying that I've kind of answered my own question. I think it's the combination of needing to do something to solve a problem and wanting it to look good or different that I miss.

And losing drive bays on cases meant you can't do much to new cases without being destructive. Baybuses and the like were almost just easy to add bling to suit your taste at that time.

Remember back in the day (2016) when i had a Phanteks Enthoo Pro and thought it would be a good idea to gut it so it was fully open space for water cooling.

It did look ok but i lost most of the structual stability and it was only the side panels keeping it square. :p

Also my first and only water cooling attempt and some home made cable extensions.

As the years go by 8 turns into nothing

I'd love that setup now tbh, never did any water-cooling and there seems little point these days.

I knew somebody who made a setup out of a fish tank... as you can imagine that didn't end well

I did like to tinker with my PC, swapping stuff out and such but when i did the water cooling it made it difficult so took it out.

It was a good (but expensive) experiment and proved to myself i could do it.

Also i modded the bios on that motherboard (Asus Maximius V gene Z77) so i could boot off a NVME drive.
