Just wondering, in the next few months i will be replacing my PSU, is it pretty easy, just swap them and connected everything to it? Or is it a little harder than that?

Thanks

Fitting the PSU is easy enough, its just connecting all the leads, and trying to keep all the leads tidy thats troublesome.

Best advice I can give is label each lead on your current PSU, and then, when you've taken it out, compare those leads to the ones on the new PSU.

Oh, and make sure the PSU will fit in your case ^^

It may seem like an easy enough job but in some cases if you have a big PSU or a big CPU heatsink you may end up having to unmount the CPU cooler or even take off the motherboard in order to swap the PSU.

As mentioned above, it really depends on your case layout. With my case, I am lucky, I have enough room to do it with all the drives/cpu cooler/everything in place still.

A friend wasnt so lucky, and when I was doing it for him, I had to remove half is damn components first :(

Either way, My PSU is sitting outside my case, with wires trailing inside the case at the moment, while I wait for my 8800 GTS. Then I will go thru and make all the wires neat and tidy (and actually put the PSU inside ;) ).

In general though, it should be a pretty easy task. Open your case, and have a peak how much room you have at the moment around your PSU :)

It may be worth buying some small cable ties to keep things tidy. Only use them AFTER you have tested everything works.

Changing a PSU is probably the simplest hardware change you can perform on a PC. There is no need for drivers or bios change. Just pull all the old cables out, remove old psu, insert new psu. plug new cables in, turn on.

Why would you need to label those leads Lol. Kinda obvious where each one goes to.

To the OP, yea it is pretty easy, take the old one and put in the new one.

Theres a few I can think of that could cause confusion. If your PSU has a 20+4 pin connector, the 4 pin could be confused with the CPU power connector. Graphics connections could be confused, and then if you disconnect other cables such as USB headers, fan cables, firewire header etc they can be confusing aswell.

Admittedly, if you spend 2 minutes and think about it, you'll realise nothing much can be THAT badly confused, by don't assume everyones as good as yourself :p

If you read the instructions that come with the PSU you won't have this problem, thats why they come with manuals.....

Yeah, just make sure you tie those cables down well.
It's really irritating, when loose cables rattle on the inside of the case, when being blown by fans.

Do you? Gosh you kids have it easy these days*. ;) When I bought my last PSU I got it full retail boxed and it didn't come with instructions, I feel so cheated.

As a slightly more helpful post, as long as you take your time and don't try to force anything with more than moderate pressure it should be very hard to go wrong with a PSU. The leads can generally only go one way round as they are either shaped or have clips to direct you. :)

*Just checked your profile and you are about 3 years older than me. :D
