i have a fileserver (and possible part time htpc) running off a abit an8 ultra, currently it has 2x512mb sticks of ocz ddr in there, was considering getting another 1gb from the MM, will that work or will i need to have another 2x 512mb sticks?

obviously i'll loose the dual channel aspect if i add one stick but how much will i miss that considering its going to be a fileserver/htpc machine?

You'll have no issues as long as its the same type, or if it it will run at the slowest speed. i.e DDR400/DDR333/DRR266 etc. You may have to set the timmings manually.

You'll maybe see a 1% performance decrease from not running dual channel ! so i'd doubt you'd see any difference. :)

they will be different makes but all ddr pc3200. i just remember setting up a mate's machine, with 2x512 of the same ocz i have, but tried to add another stick of 512 he had lying around and the motherboard would post with it in.

not sure if it was pc3200 as well though.
