Is sandybridge worth it?

I know the Sandybridges are faster than the older socket 1366 i7’s, but is the difference big enough to be worth it considering the motherboards and memory are much better on socket 1366?

I’m considering getting an i7 960 to replace an ageing Q6600, but I will be keeping my ATI 5850 for a while longer. I guess I am hoping you will convince me this is the right choice instead of the sandybridge?

one question - how is motherboards and memory (memory is the same as for 1366 - it has nothing to do with sockets..) is better on 1366? where did you get this from?
early adopters, including me,maybe suffered with some bios problems, but its sorted long time ago, there are plenty mobos from asus,msi,gigabyte,asrock...
as for upgrade - why you should upgrade to old tech, when new Sandy is here, especially when you later just can pop in Ivy Bridge if needed?

Sandybridge doesn't support triple channel, also the fastest dual channel memory is quite a bit slower than the triple channel stuff.

I'm also still yet to find a 1155 board that supports 16x/16x crossfire.

"fastest dual channel memory is quite a bit slower than the triple channel" - actually no

Doesnt make difference at all - tripple channel makes advantage only for some software,Sandy dual memory is faster for almost all tasks.

Keep in mind its January 3, 2011,so since then all mobo manufacturers released many bioses with much better performance.
As for mobo - there are some from Asus,Gigabyte,MSI - doubt you cant find them

well,i guess if he can wait for dozzer, then he also can wait for Sandy E and Ivy..
Theres no better time for upgrade like NOW ;)

Triple channel makes next to no difference to be fair.

It's because the CPU's only have 16 PCI-E lanes, the Gigabyte UD7's have an NF200 chip that somehow turns the 16 lanes into 32 but performance has been shown to be no different really.. it's useful if you want to run tri or quad graphics cards though.

DONT GET ANYTHING YET. sorry caps

wait till AMD bring there new chips out.

but if you must upgrade sandybridge is better than i7 920 etc

sandybridge is the future of technology today, bulldozer is the future of technology GOD KNOWS WHEN...

the bulldozer chips are the same generation as the sandybridge chips, just bulldozer has been severely delayed. i doubt that bulldozer will have much gain over sandybridge, if any :l

and even if it does, when sandybridge-e comes out, its lights out AMD (again)

So going SB for one of my puters, like the look of the Asrock extreme 7, but also like the MSI Z68A-GD80-G3 Intel Z68
