Is separation of UI and application via X still a thing on Linux?

I've not bothered with Linux for many years, but I remember X Windows being a thing back then, with the application being based on one computer and the UI being separate, possibly on another computer. Is that still the case? For all apps? Or is the Linux GUI strictly local apps only now, with remote desktop taking over?

To be fair though a lot of distros have it disabled by default.
