Is server hosting a viable business venture?

Hi Chaps,

I work for a small hosting company with plenty of network and server resources spare and have been toying with the idea of hosting gaming/vent servers.

Do you think there's still a demand for it? It would seem pretty easy for me to set up.

There's always demand for it, but with more and more publishers selecting only a few BIG or Select hosts, getting games that people want to host with you will be very hard.

If you feel you could compete with people like Fragnet, Multiplay, Gameservers etc then go for it, but it's not going to be cheap.

Yes definatly

However since you are talking about a business venture you should put some research into not only whats popular amongst the consumer base but also optimized well.. in the sense that as you are probably aware (as a gamer and because of your professional background) some stuff is optimised pretty poorly so you don't want to be hosting a load of stuff that although popular is pigging out on your resources

Like choosing between a game which is flavor of the month (everybody and their mother is playing it) but the server software package is buggy/unstable and a resource hog, vs a game which while not as popular as the first game has a consumer lifespan of up to 24 months, and more stable server package which does not need its hand held

I don't believe you HAVE to go up against the so-called establishment (your multiplays etc) you could look into carving out a "niche" market specialising in certain game hosting... worry about competition later you just want to get yourself established and at a point of breaking even for the moment while you build up a user base, keep it managable

Good luck with it

Gazanimal - Thanks, not sure how we'd compete with them, we'll see.

hairyfeet - Thanks for the insight :).

uniQ - Terrible, but we already have a sales & marketing guy

YarwoodUK - We already mitigate against DDoS attacks, our primary business is hosting.
