Just signed up for Steam as I am gonna try Empire Total War

Its taking an age to download, restarted Steam and now it wont login.

Is it always like this or can it be speeded up?

steam slow this weekend as there was a lot of games coming out at once so there are millions downloading there games at once, most of the time i get 2MBps on downloads. so very fast :)

Shaggy, your reason for joining is the exact reason Steam is so slow. There are many in the exact same situation as you, joining for E:TW and hammering the steam servers ;)

im trying to download dow2 but its getting about 300KB/s at maximum and every so often it drops to 150KB/s, only 50% done after 3 hours :(

Steam is Awesomeness wrapped up in a PC prog, Fact.
Busy weekend so just stick with it, Steam is one of the few progs that will take advantage of your connection & is a Superb addition to any PC users armoury.

I find Steam to be really random. I remember downloading Css once and it taking forever.... literally was going at like 5kbp/s, and then on some other games I have downloaded it going at over 700kbp/s.

In Settings --> Downloads --> change your steam download location to US East Coast - went much faster for me after a reboot of steam when that was changed :)

Changing download region can help, although remember to change it back to your own region later on (as some games use this setting - i.e. L4D finds lobbies/servers based on the region you have chosen).

Steam is made out of win. Fact.

Just a busy weekend, having a few games/demo's come out at the same time.
16 Million + people use steam, thats a lot of people downloading.
