Is that true that the MMO games are more CPU related?

Hi guys, as we all know that most AAA single player games such as Witcher 3, DragonAge, etc all those shiny graphics games are more GPU related.

In most cases that gpu will bottleneck.

How it works with MMO/MMORPG games such as:

eve online - graphics is a joke compare to Witcher 3,
wow - same
Lineage 2 - same

Do you have an experience in this case and could u confirm that MMO/MMORPG games use more CPU power than actually GPU.

You know, low details, low gpu usage and many players in one place that need strong CPU to actually count all that they doing.

Question: is that true that mmo games use more CPU power than GPU

Hope that you will understand what I am on about :)

ff14 needs very VERY strong GPUs for 60fps at max details and AA etc. I can use 100% of both 980tis overclocked to max at 4k but never use more than 70% of the cpu.

Been playing WoW for years. It's very CPU dependent game in raids (a ton of people a particles). 7970 running below 50% load here with i5 at 4.2Ghz.

Depends on how the game was made. The games you've listed are pretty old and were made back when the average GPU performance was low. They can update the game engine to something that can make use of the GPU more but then that will leave out a lot of players out, a majority of users still use integrated graphics.

CPU "power" is pretty vague. If you mean single core performance, EVE is agnostic. In 17 years never pushed the CPUs back in 2003 let alone today.

L2 is 17y old and it's process needs hasn't been moved forward. WoW on the other hand is a bloatware especially with mods.

ESO runs superb on multicore CPUs, doesn't overload a thread with 100% load, however is very very sensitive to memory latency. The difference between 2133 to 3000 even on an Intel 6700K is over 10% more fps, let alone 3600C16. (used to play it with a 4930K and later 6700K when came out).

So what's your actual question?

GPU is important, but a 2080ti is way overkill for an MMORPG.

CPU is important but also limited in scope because the most popular MMORPG's are the ones that are 10years+ old and were poorly coded for modern CPU's

I mainly play MMOs and it depends on how old the game is. One thing I know for sure is RAM usage has gone up considerably in the last few years due to larger file sizes, expansion data etc. I would recommend a minimum of 16GB RAM for playing MMOs these days.

Older MMOs (pre-2010) are definately more CPU intensive however they run just fine on any modern CPU any FPS issues are likely due to limitations with the game engine and not your pc specs, newer MMOs are more GPU intensive and use considerably (40% or more) more GPU power by comparison.

It's true that MMO's will tax the CPU in general more but another thing is WoW is a nearly 20 year old game, the engine is ancient and has had so many layers of lipstick put on it over the years that it's probably very inefficient code too. They can't optimise it too drastically else they will probably break the game.

WoW has gone through its own performance issues as well. I can remember i started playing wow after I bought a r290x 8 years ago only to be very dissspointed with the performance because AMD gpus at the time ran poorly in WoW

I'd say that MMOs are way more likely to have weird quirks and optimisations, due to the passing of time and the way the decisions made building the engine pan out. The optimum PC for an old MMO can look really different to a new MMO, or a shooter, but even so, it's not worth buying a customised (e.g. really high clock speed quad core, or an unbalanced CPU/GPU pairing) PC, because modern 6/8-core CPUs have no issue with old engines and they work way better with everything new too.

Edit: just noticed the thread-necro, damn
