is the 128 bit bus bad just for gaming?

Hello,

After the few times ive spoke about graphic cards i am looking more into it now ive got my 5900x system up and running however this system i want to be sort of an all rounder.(gaming/creativity/productivity/small business)

One of the cards i was looking to add to my list was the 4060ti 16gb as i will be looking to spend 200-350 unless any sales on higher end cards, but i know one of its flaws is having 128bit bus. Gaming isnt going to be the main use other than when i come to record & edit gameplay.

Cant list any software to use as an example as i am only using Filmora 14 right now and not decided what to use for the other things im going to do, so its just a general question really.

It really depends on the usage, some just want more memory capacity and couldn't give two hoots about the rest (e.g. one scenario is you try to render and it just cuts out or reverts to CPU rendering if you exceed the VRAM).

On the other hand, if something is bandwidth heavy (games being one) then the 16GB of VRAM might be of limited benefit to you.

For me personally, the bus width isn't really the question, the question is: does the 4060 Ti have a level of performance that satisfies you? If it doesn't, then the 16GB of VRAM is not relevant outside of the specific use cases that mandate it.

There aren't that many buyers where a 4060 Ti 16GB would be preferred over the similarly priced 7800 XT, which just has way more performance:

We'd need to know the specific apps you use though, to say if AMD is a bad move.

To be fair ive never been in a position where one matters more as my gaming is usually on console or pc wise tends to be games like city skylines, the sims and rgp stuff like wow, star craft etc, but since i started the game testing again and purchased cyberpunk 2077 for it plus getting BO6 and a couple others off game pass then i will want to continue those otherwise my general usage etc i do on my laptop.

The other uses as part of the creativity/productivity will be music(sounds)creating with use of midi controllers etc, web & graphics design, office stuff for the small business im setting up, Filmora 14(plus updated versions). I did a course years ago for game development using unreal engine, but i was only on the course long enough to cover 2D/Pixel based only and so would like to have a look at that again.

All this is on a amateur level, so the type of software for those subjects will differ in terms of demands from the system to start with. I havent looked in to specific software as ones i had before i didnt like and i dont know what ones are good these days without being too complex. [I guess the best way to answer that question would be software that can be used by both amd/nvidia}

Having never had a card with more than 8gb i wouldnt say id need 16gb. i would only be choosing that incase i ever find myself needing it further down the line plus the price difference with the 8gb isnt that much.

So for the gaming side, all i want is 1440p high settings that gives smooth gameplay and 70-100fps. With how much the 4060tis are, i dont want to end up making a bad choice if i went for one. 128bit & price was 2 of the main flaws i found when searching.

The 128-bit is only a flaw in the sense that nvidia increased the memory capacity, but left the rest unchanged. I think the 4060 Ti 16GB WILL have a longer usable life than the 8GB version just because it'll cope with games having higher VRAM demands for longer, but the performance is not... great and despite the VRAM capacity I still consider it a 1080p card. If you can get a 4060 Ti 16GB for not much more than the 8GB version, then by all means, but it is not a card I'd be buying for your usage. I'd even take a 6800 non-XT over the 4060 Ti, but it is true that they're closer.

So far as I'm aware, none of those should pose a problem for AMD, with the exception of Filmore and UE5, I'm not sure about the implications of using AMD there.
