If you buy a £200 retail version of windows, are you covered in any way if say you broke or snapped the dvd, or if it got badly scratched?

just make a copy

you can probably ask for a 2nd disc from ms, but will likely cost you £15 or so

I thought it would be copy protected?
nope but its still illegal to make a backup in the UK at least, replacement media can be had from MS but like Bledd said its around £15 for a replacement

I can't believe this what a ****g rip off! you pay 200 quid for a cd and you would think MS would provide a warranty!

wtf, illegal to make a backup copy?

what is the world coming to

In the UK we have no Fairuse laws, which in countries such as America let you legally back up movies, DVDs and games for backup and personal use :) It's still illegal to rip CDs here in the UK, although most people turn a blind eye to it.

If you snapped, scratched, or destroy your CD, thats your lookout, If you buy a new car, and then crash it into a brick wall, your new car warrenty wont cover the repair bill.

If the CD is faulty (no scratches, but doesnt play due to defects) then of course MS would have to replace it free of charge. Most software/cd/dvd's are covered for 90 days against manufactuing defects.

It's near impossible to break a disc unless your unable to treat cd's with care. I've never once damaged a CD beyond use and i leave things out the cases all the time.

Also how often are you even gonna use the disc? Mines in a box under my bed where it will stay. Its hardly like you need it everytime you turn the PC on or keep it on display.

if i could make backups of my car, i'd play real life destruction derby all day

It's only illegal to make backups of audio cds and dvds, software is still allowed under the crra.

Actually faulty dvd drives can damage disks, and the cd can sometimes disintegrate in the drive at high speeds if there is a flaw on the cd. You also can't account for a fire, flood, tornado, theft etc etc.

do thhey give you the key or does it get activated behind the scene?

Thats the serial / key which will be printed or loose in the box which you type in when installing windows, oem you affix the sticker to the case.

I would certainly be ****** off if I spent £330 on a key that got burned in a fire!

*reminders to keep copy of CD key in fire proof, water proof, wind proof anti burglar safe. :p

Why would they do that? It's not their fault you scratch/lose the disc is it? Why should they spend time/money rectifying your mistake
