Is the Denon AVR-X1700H the best budget option for 4K/120Hz?

Okay, bit of backstory..

I bought a used Onkyo SR607 from the members market a while back and I absolutely love it! Sadly it doesn't support 4K or ARC.

My issue is, I upgraded the living room TV to a Hisense U7H which does 4K/120Hz and while 120Hz isn't that important, I might as well cover that aspect while I'm upgrading anyway.

My only option now is to use the TV's HDMI inputs and connect to the receiver via optical cable, which works, but not the way I prefer..

Hence the question, is there anything better below or matching in this price range?

Do you need actually 120hz? It's only for gaming. If you're not connecting consoles than a AVR with HDMI 2.0 4K 60hz is fine.

Denon 1700 has the more basic room EQ
Is the 1700 still available to purchase from retailers? I'm only able to find the 1700H from a quick search.

Ultimately it depends on the price difference really. If I'm only aiming for 4K 60Hz then there might even be cheaper alternatives.

If you 120hz isn't required than any HDMI 2.0 spec AVR will be ok. Would you want a AVR with pre outs?

Personally I'd look for a older, second hand higher end AVR. You should be able to get Denon 4500 for £400. Which has more power, pre outs, better room EQ.

If you want 5.1 AVR then having Atmos is pointless, as it just downmixes anyway. Will be using two subwoofers?

Issue of warranty of course.

It'll just be a single sub with 5 passive speakers.

Maybe I should just take a gamble on another used Onkyo..

I know this is above the suggested price but I recommend spending a bit more and go for the Marantz Cinema 70. The reason I suggest this is because it has the HDMI ports you suggested but also has pre outs (7 channels) so in the future you have the flexibility to add an external amps should you wish. There is also the Marantz NR1711 which does have a single HDMI 2.1, it’s close to your budget but lacks the pre outs of the cinema 70.
