is the ds3 nb that hot?

I got my ram today and booted up thesystem. To ny surprise, ny abtec p160 probe showed the temp of the chipset at a toasty 61 celcius. I tested *** probe by measuring my skin temp, which it showed to be at 35, which is somewhat right... so is it normal for the ds3 nb to be at 61? it is hot to the touch..
would that limit my oc potential due to the heat...

please advice
should i leave it alone or get a better heatsink
I am on air atm.. and cna't afford to go water..

i got a 40mm fan to stick on top of the nb which i haven't attach yet.. woud it help or shouold i go for a zalman zm-nbf47 ?

i dont have that mobo never had it, but i heave read a lot about it : yes , seen some threads with people saying it is gettign too hot and seen pictures of modded cooling...
Since u say u have a 40 mm fan, install it and recheck temperature, if its still too hot then buy a small cpu cooler (prefferably a heatpipe one) or the Thermalright HR-05 Northbridge Heatsink, if still too hot with the thermalright u can mount a 70 mm (or smaller) fan on it then it should be cool.
It can limit overclock if it gets too hot.

Can you not do what I did on my Asus p5w...

Just bought a couple of fans and it took 10c of the temps.

i tried puttign the fna on and leaving it there using my hands.. to my surprise the temp only went down 5c
and thats not at peak.. while i was doing some prime testing it went up to 77c

which freaked the hell outta me...

i have ordered a zalman zm-nbf47 as it is said to be the best from an auction site adn will stick my 40mm fan on it somehow to try and get better cooling..

i am so scared that i don't quite dare to oc.. i am trying to fix my windows installation atm

The temps you quoted do seem rather high, and i know the DS3 can run hot, but provided you have a good airflow through your case, that should be plenty. My DS3, along with a 6400 (freezer7) and some nice corsair ram currently running at 3.2 gig seems safe, idle at 24 cpu, and system 35. I have notied the heatsinks on this board do throw out some heat, and upon finding this out, i increased the airflow within my lan li PC7 case to compensate. I`ll admit my 7900GT with a VF900, which runs dangerously close to the battery and southbridge helps cool that area.

Intel 975x is the only current "Enthusiast" chipset where cooling solutions past a swifty MCX159-CU are a worth a look at. It puts out a surprising amount of heat, and the peak temps can affect Max FSB.

When it comes to watercooling setup suggestions, its the only NB I recommend be added to the loop for overclockers.

The problem is that many of the existing enthusiat mobos for conroe dont use the full 4 hooks of the standard Intel mounting, making getting a decent mount on aftermarket sinks and waterblocks unintuitive.

There is also another problem - many of these conroe mobos lack a backing plate for the CPU area, meaning large heatsinks make the motherboard bulge and when this occurs only the edge of the chipset die makes conctact with a cooling surface, even with the stock cooling.

this is now really weird.. i glued my 40 mm fan on it, raised vcore abit and not the temp is at 44 at load at dual prime..
i mean raising vcore can drop temp by 20c?
wtf.. totally weird..

i added the fan this morning while leaving the system running prime all night.. the temp dropped from 71 to around 54ish when i raised vcore, disabled the extras

my problem now is with my cpu core temp.. at dual prime load running small fft, they are peaking at 63 with *** case window open... sigh
