Is the gfx divide between the PS4 and XO narrowing?

I'm looking to buy one of these consoles in the coming months for the arrival of Witcher 3 (I know PC would be best but I'll stick with console for convenience).

Onto the question of gfx, am I likely to notice much gain on the PS4? I know as developers get more time with the hardware results improve, meaning the XO shouldn't be that far behind.

Is there anything that should sway me more to one than the other, e.g. noise?

So you think as developers get more time with both consoles only the xb1 will improve and ps4 will stay the same?

If anything as developers get more time the gap is going to grow wider as they harness the extra power more efficiently. It's quite a big gap between the two in terms of power available. The PS4 is also easier to code for.

Speaking from multi-platform games I've seen very little if any difference. You're more likely to see visible gains on PS4 exclusive games. Either way you go, you'll be pleased. You might wanna give the controllers a try to see which feels better in your hand?

This. Controller comfort, which one your friends have and then any exclusives or features you might prefer to use. Comparing graphics on them is tedious and boring due to so little difference. Anyone who says the difference is massive is lying. It's usually only noticeable from about 2 feet from the screen and having the two side by side.

Developers have pretty much admitted gimping PS4 versions to avoid the 'debate' but owning both its obvious the Xbone could not do The Order 1886 or even Killzone.

The difference will always be there, it's how developers choose to use it.

Those who have trouble seeing resolution differences, when the images are blown up on our 65" 4k TVs in a couple of years, it will be easier to see.

Xbone: 1.31 TF GPU (12 CUs) for games
Xbone: 768 Shaders
Xbone: 48 Texture units
Xbone: 16 ROPS
Xbone: 2 ACE/ 16 queues

PS4: 1.84TF GPU ( 18 CUs) for games
PS4: 1152 Shaders +50%
PS4: 72 Texture units +50%
PS4: 32 ROPS + 100%
PS4: 8 ACE/64 queues +300%

You mean poor game play wise? :D

Nice one stoke the console wars  This is a thread talking about graphics not anything else TBF.

From what ive heard the XB1 tools at the start of this gen have been improved by a large margin and freeing up resources eg no kinect have made it possible for the Devs to get closer to the XB1 theoretical GPU power. Problem is the PS4 has also had improvements that has done the same, but as the tool set was in a better state at launch it doesn't always seem the PS4 has improved as much.
I tend to think devs get the PS4 version to a state of "that will do" and then maximise the XB1 version to get to that point, without needing to spend time on maximising the PS4 version. Gives them more time to concentrate time on the XB1 version and if its pretty close in gfx terms in the end they are happy enough to avoid all the discussion about resolution etc.

I feel sorry for those that can only afford one console and plumped for a PS4. It's clear that Sony are struggling to sign big western exclusives and don't seem able to improve PSN or implement missing features on the software front (instant resume and dlna being the most notable).

Also as highlighted above, it seems that most developers are using the X1 as a measure so the PS4 versions end up being extremely similar in graphical quality.

The graphics divide only exists in the minds of people that like playing spec top trumps. You would have to be trying really, really, really hard to convince yourself that the gaming experience on an XB1 is materially inferior to PS4.

Theres a couple of game, especially that are terrible on xbox one but fine on ps4, main one for me is battlefield 4. I just can't overlook the grainy look of the 720p on xbox. The ps4 version is much less distracting.

Oh really? I have both and Ryse on Xbox One is every bit as graphically impressive as The Order.

In response to the OP, and anyone else that starts a thread like this, get which ever your friends are on/which controller you prefer/which has the exclusives you want and stick with it.

I don't care who you are, when you're really enjoying a game the graphics difference, which will be minimal to begin with, will not be noticeable after a while. If the tiny graphics difference (in some cases) bothers you that much then you're a plonker as I bet many are still playing PS3/XB360 games...
Performance is another issue that can spoil games, but we're not talking about that.

PS4 is slightly noisier than XBO if that bothers you, but again, you'd never hear it when playing a game. I don't.

Not sure they need nor want your pity really. I'm more than happy with my PS4 and I'm glad I chose it over the Xbox.

Is game streaming likely to make an appearance on this gen of consoles?

Personally would look at the game exclusives - Halo franchise sold the Xbox for me and so far I have been impressed.

Hopefully dx12/w10 will push the xbox on a bit.

Sure, it's obvious

Of course it could, a few optimisations would have to be made but the hardware differences are not as big as people make them out to be. Console features, friends and ergonomics are much bigger factors than which has marginally less jaggies.
