Is the GTO2 still the best card for £150

If I was to take the plunge and get one of the Sapphire GTO2s from here, would it be the best card to get for less than £150 inc. VAT, should the bios flash and overclock to near XT PE speeds go ok?

Or have things moved on in the last few months, dethroning the GTO2 as being the 'best bang for the buck?'

Would this card be good enough to run UT2007, as I vaguely recall Mark Rein saying that a 7800GT would be good for the lastest release of this FPS series?

I believe the powercolor x800xt is £150 and is clocked at 520/540 from factory IIRC. Also there is supposed to be a powercolor x800gto -16 with 16pipes enabled by default, havent seen any for sale though (and not been looking either happy with my connect3d x800gto @16 pipes).

the new gto2s are already unlocked to 16 pipes, and have Avivo.

but powercolor does an x850xt for £150, which I would personally go for - I think OcUK is the only store that does them so cheap - though i havent really shopped around.

Have to agree I faced the same choice a fortnight back and went for the Powercolor X850XT and have had it up to PE with no probs at all. It will go higher but will wait till I put an Artic or Zalman cooler on it

yup, my card is gboing fine too, ordered it 2 weeks ago. The memory has git 650 and the core has hit 575 already. Gonna do a volt mod and see what else i can get out of it. Im scoring around 7100 3d marks at 560/630 with the rig in my sig, so its up there with a 7800gt's stock score atm.

Will post some results when i get round to volt modding the memory and core.

About my only worry about getting the x850xt is how long it will be able to cope with games of the future. After posting this thread, I discovered that the 8 series of ATI cards lack SM3, whose use will only grow in future games.

I'm wondering now whether I should spend another £70 above the x850xt and get the Leadtek 7800GT, which is the cheapest I've found a 7800GT so far on the web?

i was stuck in the same situation, x850 or pay the extra for a 7800. I went with the x850 because i didnt see it worth an extra 70 quid just for sm3 and i also thought that by the time SM3 was necessary in games this card would be somewhat outdated anyway.

I dont know, but if i were you i would save the 70 quid and buy another gig of ram, that would make your games much smoother than the jump from an x850 to a 7800.

Sorry to butt-in here, but...

Can anyone tell me what the X800 is on par with of my cards?

I have XFX6600GT and a BFG6800GS in my 2 main PCS, also a 9800Pro in my No3... Erm, FX5700 is my XP64 box ( Ahem! )

Anyway, after 4 dead ATI cards, I lost hope in them, but some are sayign that they are good... Fancy another now. Must be AGP and I am looking at the Powercolor right now... So, what should I expect of it when compared to the above cards?

I'm currently running an X850XTPE with a slight overclock 600/600 and score over 7000k in 3D Mark 05, its a very powerful card, especially for that kind of money. It doesn't have SM3.0 like you're 6800GS but in terms of raw power it will give it a sound beating.

Totally agree, that was my thought. I have seen this review which included an example of the current showing difference between SM2 and SM3 in a game

To answer your Q:
6800GS similar to X800XL
6600GT similar to X800GT (both bit faster than 9800Pro)

PowerColor ATI Radeon X850XT faster than 6800GS & for now fastest AGP card arround.

I got a 6800GS XXX edition for £130, and id take the pepsi challenge with a X850XT any day of week with it. It is truly a fast card, i dont even bother to overclock it and get 13400 3dmarks 2003 with my p4 3ghz at default speed.

Are you saying an 6800GS is as fast as an x850XT? I'm not sure thats right.

It seems he is. Will I now have to do one of these benchmarks that I have never felt the need to before, to give me piece of mind!!!

Still in the real world my X850XT has played Half life and Far Cry with everything on, thats what I bought it for (along with Doom 3, Quake 4 and Battlefield 2 now I can buy them knowing I have a card capable of doing them justice.)
