Is the GTX480 £140 better than the GTX 470?!

Going by ocuk's prices the cheapest 470 is £223, cheapest 480 £360.

I'm upgrading some stuff soon and even though don't NEED a new GPU want one:) and under water too. I would overclock as well.

I know the 480 is a powerful card but I can't see it being '£140 more powerful' when the 470 is clocked right up?

Thoughts?

Well you can clock the GTX480 too so...?

It really comes down to how much you want to spend - although there's also the HD5850 and 5870 to consider as well.

I have both - an ocuk value 470 and a POV480 and the 470 is much better value for money
There is nothing wrong with the 480, but it is not worth the extra money for the little bit in performance that you get. Also, for me, I can overclock the hell out of the 470 - Im upto 775Mhz from 607Mhz, whereas with the 480 I cant get it stable beyond 750Mhz from 700Mhz, no matter how much I play with the voltage

Top of the range cards are rarely good value for money. Unless scoring a bit higher in benchmarks means a lot to you then the GTX 470 is probably the one to go for.

Man must be poor overclocker, 750 only on the core :( I can do 850 on an EVGA SC with stock volts and that smokes an overclocked 470.

Tell me about it - if Im willing to go to 95C I can get 820 out of my 470, but the 480 just keeps defaulting back to 2D clocks on anything over 750, I have tried all the way upto 1.100mV  in an effort to wring a bit more out of it..

Put it this way, if i had i7 rig, I would defo grab a 480. You always pay a lot more for a little more performance at the top end. It's prob about 15% faster than the 470 once both cards are clocked to the max.

I get about 34fps on the Heaven 2.1 benchmark with a 3.4Ghz c2d compared with 40fps for RavenXXX with a 4Ghz i7. Thats at 1680x1050, 4xAA, 16xAF, extreme tessellation.

Im also looking at getting a gtx 480 before mafia 2 comes out. My reasoning is buying top end may not get you the best performance per pound but will give you the best performance even if not by a massive margin.

The answer is the gtx 480 is £140 better than the gtx 470 as its faster than the gtx 470:D

No the 480 is not £140 better than the 470. No doubt about it, it IS faster, that is where some of the £140 comes from.
But the cost per fps is more on the 480 than on the 470.
The rest of the £140 comes from the fact that it is the fastest single card at the moment. You are paying for the status

I wouldn't say its worth owning for status, rather self-satisfaction of owning the best you can afford. I doubt I'll ever be able to afford the best car on the market as 1.6 million is beyond me unless I win the lotto however a bit of overtime at work means I can treat myself to the current fastest single gpu on the market and that makes me smile:)

Yes, but that self satisfaction comes from the fact that it has the status of being the fastest thing you can afford ;)

very true:D I'm extra conscious of this as last gen I wimped out of buying the gtx 285 when I got my gtx 275 so I promised myself I'd go for top spec this time:)

Maybe the old saying rings true here, "buy the best you can afford". Those few extra FPS could mean another x number of months before you'll need to upgrade which actually could mean cheaper ownership when the cost is averaged out. And by the time you do need to upgrade, better products will be availbe to buy which might not be available if you buy the lesser card (beucase you may upgrade sooner)

If I was sensible, I would go for the 470, clock the nuts off it and put the extra £130 towards the AMD 6000 series when they come out :D

Thats for gaming though, since Im a seti nut, Im stuck with nvidia cards for the mo...

Wow thats a poor clocker. I have had 3 different 480's and all have hit 890Mhz.

You should be able to hit 825mhz on air with ease.

To the OP go for a 480 its a great card and a total power house.

Shuzzbutt fancy seeing you on here mate. :D

i wouldn't say its worth the extra £140 as far as performance/cost goes.

but its always the same with top end cards, they always cost more for abit extra performance.

but if you want the performance, u just have to pay the extra.

if you have the money, then i would definatly go for the 480, u wont regret it.

edgedemon, sounds like something is wrong somewhere, not seen any cards that didn't get over 800.

mine does 825 easily without needing extra volts, and can get to 850 by increasing the volts, and thats just using the stock cooler

Interesting points of view.
I sorta vowed to never spend over £300 on a GPU, I mean that's more than a PS3 and some games, its just mental when you stop and think about it!

For £300 notes I don't break my rule and have a watercooled 470.
My next monitor will be 120hz no matter and I want to try 3D too, going in with a neutral outlook to see if I like it. That's why I need as much nvidia firepower as I can get in a single card as my mobo can't do SLI.

Yes I can afford the 480 but i'm also overhauling the case and cooling of the rig with a big emhpasis on aesthetics which will no doubt have unforseen costs...

If more 'crysis-esque' games suddenly start coming then fairplay but we are just getting console ports:(

it is the best card to get at moment as long as you run a high res , are you? pointless if your low Res.. that's like B&W mode.

also the 480 is better than the 470 because the number is bigger lol. would be daft to name them lower to higher.
