without being too obvious that it should be, would this processor be a huge upgrade?.

I have seen a custom system inside a viglen genie tower which has a MSI H81M-P33, 16gb ram, i7 4790(so they listed)a 9600 gt and some generic power supple all for £100, It's in the wrong case, but the i7 seems to be selling more than double the cost of the system, I'm just wondering whether it's actually worth it and even just for the sake of it and bragging rights lol. I do have my pc set up again and in use, so not like I wouldn't use it, just whether that £100 be well spent.

Okay nevermind, was waiting for a response from them which they just got back to me, it's under offer (it's on gum) and they been offered more for it, but less than £160, so I'm going to have to leave it, rather spend the money upgrading my current computer in certain areas instead as I doubt I could get more than £130 for my mobo combo and quick enough too.

However I'd still like to know how big of an upgrade it would actually be in general for someone who likely wouldn't require more than 4 cores any time soon?

I have an i3 4160 for my office machine and tbh at no point did I feel it was slow. For office apps and general use it's more than adequate. However if you also plan to game on it then the 4790 will be a significant upgrade. Match it up with a 1060 or similar and there won't be anything you can't handle at 1080p.

Until last month my boy used a 4160 for gaming, it played all games at 1080 no problems. However he now as a 4790k at stock speeds and games/large app load times feel a lot faster and the system feels a lot more responsive
