This is my rig......

Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z Motherboard
Intel Core i7-2700k CPU
Gigbyte HD7970 3GB Graphics Card fitted
(ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 980 4GB Graphics Card removed for now)
Corsair H100 Liquid CPU Cooler
AData S511 240Gb Solid State Drive
16Gb RAM ( 4 X 4Gb RipJawsZ Quad Channel kit)
Seasonic Platinum 1000W Power Supply

I'm having problems with a drop in framerate after the PC has been running for 30-45 minutes, booting the machine from cold (with 7970 fitted). I ran 'Battle of Berlin' benchmark in 'War Thunder', average frame rate - 116, minimum - 70.4.

I then fitted my new GTX 980 (after the obvious uninstall of drivers with DDU) ran the same benchmark and got an average - 211.3, minimum 122.8. And very pleased I was too. Then thing went downhill, after playing War Thunder for 45 minutes or so things slowed down, I ran the benchmark and it had dropped to - average - 50, minimum 21. I couldn't work out why so I posted this thread IN THE GRAPHIC CARD SECTION......CLICK

This morning when I booted my PC and ran the War Thunder benchmark immediately I got high frame rates with the GTX 980 fitted, but after 30 to 45 minutes the frame rate dropped to low figures again. I shut down the PC did an unistall/re-install of the drivers and refitted the 7970 to see if the problem arose with that.

I got a an average - 108.3, minimum - 71.8 with Battle of Berlin benchmark after refitting the 7970, but again after 30 -40 minutes the frame rate dropped significantly.

I also ran Unigine Heaven 4 benchmark with both cards these are the results for the 7970......

7970 (PC booted from cold) Max - 98.7 - Min - 25.1
7970 (PC running for over an hour) Max - 56.1 - Min - 21.4

I think it's safe to say both graphics cards are OK? So could the problem be with the motherboard? This is certainly not the best Asus board i've owned, I tried fitting a DAC to it a couple of years ago only to find the optical out didn't work, I've also had problems with USB 3 not working correctly (fixed by removing a jumper for a few seconds)

I'm baffled, any ideas folks?

Should not be a PSU issue your PSU is by far capable enough to deliver the required power.

If it's starting to get slower after a period of time it may be throttling at that point. Have you monitored your temperatures and clock speeds of both gpu and cpu whilst doing these tests?

Thanks for your prompt responses guys.

PC has been on for a couple of hours now, just installed GPU temp utility, it is showing 61 degrees. I've run Heaven 4 benchmark again, maximum was only 57 frames. GPU temp rose to 63 degrees whilst on test. This is with the 7970 card fitted.

I thought there might have been a temperature issue yesterday when I fitted the GTX 980, so I manually turned the fans up to 100% but to no avail. But surely both cards cannot have issues with temperature?

My case has good ventilation, with three fans fitted, it has a good airflow around it, clear of any obstructions.

Okay, temperatures seem OK. Could you run Heaven or similar with Rivatuner overlay showing the CPU and GPU temperatures and usage. You're expecting 99% GPU usage and around 25% CPU usage.

Downloaded Rivatuner and it's an out of date version, do you know of an alternative?

Thanks. :)

All the info is in the history window of Afterburner. If it isn't showing CPU and usage info, just right click the history window and select properties, then check the settings you want to view.

Did this check earlier, PC had been running for over two hours when I tested it.

GPU temp - 60 degrees

GPU usage - 92%

CPU Temps -

cpu 1 - 0
cpu2 - 41
cpu3 - 43
cpu4 - 42
cpu5 - 39
cpu6 - 41
cpu7 - 42
cpu8 - 38

CPU usage -

0 - 3% on first 5 cores
38% on 6
0-3 % on 7th and 8th

Was the frame rate tanking at the time? Everything looks normal there mate.

Yes, low frame rate again sadly.:(
I've been into windows system configuration to block a lot of the stuff that kicks in at start up (I use Windows 10) that's not done anything.
I swapped the graphics card modular connection on the PSU just in case that was a problem, but that's not cured it either, only thing i've not done is move the graphic card to the next slot, i'll try that later.

You don't want to be watching just temperature :) watch the core clock on gpu and clock speeds on cpu cores. As they may be throttling anyway would be best to know whats happening.

With GPU usage so high and a single core running 38% then it's difficult to pinpoint the issue.

If you have the time, a video with Rivatuner overlay may help.

Sorry for the late response folks, and again, thanks for all your help and advice.

I suspected that the OS was to blame as everything else seemed fine, so last weekend I installed Windows 7 on a spare hard drive I had in the PC, the GTX 980 has run without a hitch since then.

Hopefully that's the problem solved.
