is the pc gaming world profitable?

League of legends and xbox live have the same amount of concurrent users (3m) and it's just one pc game. When you add steam 5m+, origin, tons of other dd platforms, mmos and retail games that do not use steam or origin you realise that pc gaming truly dwarfs console gaming. I would say two pc games LoL and WoW are bigger than console gaming.

It's a large user base but no bigger than either console, by any means.

which is more than xbox live and psn put together.

There are over 40 million Xbox Live subscribers worldwide. Don't skew the facts.

A single Modern Warfare game can attract almost 3 million concurrent users on Xbox live alone.

do some research about concurrent users records which is all that matter. the only way to measure popularity of a platform is by looking at the record of the amount of users connected at one time as anything else could be duplicate accounts. league of legends concurrent users record is just above 3m and xbox live record is a bit less than that. dont be upset that one pc game is more popular than your console.

I think it would be beneficial for the discussion if you've used anything else to support your "facts", but empty words.

Lol at the remark suggesting that I'm a console gamer. Get your facts straight.

good job xbox live concurrent users record is 3.3m while LoL is 3m+. That's every xbox360 user connected to the internet on the planet and that number cant even surpass one pc game. How insignificant consoles really are...

EDIT: actually that is users in one day. last xboxlive concurrent users record is at 2.2m.

I think I'm gonna report you for trolling, because I don't know what else to call it.

No, it is not lost sales.

People that go out and spend £10 on a 2nd hand game were never going to go and buy it for £35.

This is just a load of tosh that the publishers push to try and curb 2nd hand sales. Because that is easier than creating a game people will actually want to keep. If it were true, the book publishing industry would have died a century ago.

Why do people always say this? They're willing to pay 10 quid, games tend to get deep discounts to around 10 quid and lower, thus could have bought it, but now won't as they've bought it second hand, that is a lost sale.

On steam yea. In stores? Nope. If games were often £10 new, there wouldn't be a 2nd hand market would there? You would just buy new

You can never use the term "lost sales" on piracy or second hand/borrowed games. Chances are they would never paid in the first place even if that meant not playing at all. Same as downloaded games are not "Stolen" if they are then what exactly is stolen. I guess the very first copy that gets ripped maybe be stolen but that also may not be the case. Copies made from this one version and uploaded are not stolen or a lost sale.

Just my view :) No I am not a pirate I buy everything new, I used to pirate as a kid though admitted.

MW3 may have peaked at 3.3m, but that was a year ago, if they released another census I'm pretty sure the amount will be a mere fragment of that, whereas LoL is still growing and will continue to grow as time goes on.

You gotta face fact's, PC Gaming is bigger than Console.

But they've already paid, when they go second hand, that money could have went to the developer, it doesn't.

Borrowed games? I went to buy a game, my friend decided to lend me it, lost sale (Isn't always the case obviously)
But you can't say they likely wouldn't have bought the game, especially with second hand, as they're explicitly buying the game, just second hand :p

Even at its pick LoL had 4 times more daily players than Mw3. The biggest console game by far looks tiny compared to a popular pc game.

Ah yes I have to agree, second hand games are a lost sale for the devs I should not have put second hand in my post :) But piracy/borrowed can't always be labeled Lost Sale though. People always jump to the lost sale conclusion on those it seems.

I really don't understand what you're saying.

I always buy my games new, I don't always buy from Steam, I don't put down 35 quid on a game.

It really is simple. The second hand games market is massive. Big enough hat publishers go to extreme lengths to curb it.

But what your saying makes no sense. Why would large numbers of people buy pre-owned games if new are regularly just as cheap?

But new games regularly are just as cheap.
Dark Souls on PC is already 14.50 for a Steam key and can be had for sub 15 quid retail.

It is not as simple as buy new for 35 quid or buy second hand for 10 pound as you stated.

I don't know why large numbers of people buy PC games second hand (I didn't even know many did).
But they're still lost sales.

It isn't the only measure at all. Not to mention the fact that Steam is an app that, for many people, loads when their PC starts whether they're actually using Steam or not.
