Is the used car price hike only affecting certain types?

For example cheaper cars due to the volume of which they are exchanged (under £6k)

What about the mid price Germans (4 series, E class etc) since their sale volume is lower?

What about higher priced sports/luxury car... 3 year old 911 GT3 also gone up 25%?

Vans?

I've noticed Focus RS 2009 have doubled in price (17k to 40k) is this because of the same reason or just appreciation of a rare asset?

Anyone see prices falling or are we gonna have to rack up more dosh to upgrade?

anything that is in short supply new. SOme manufacturers have been hurt far more than others. Mercedes production is crippled with my car in build now missing 6 options, whereas BMW hardly seems to have been affected. You can order a new BMW for deliver in 3 months with just wireless charging missing and HK stereo not available.

Mercedes has been hit really badly with vans as they closed their sprinter factory last week as they have 21000 vans built all missing stuff and they have run out of parking space. So low mileage, newish vans are definitely going to go up in value as you just cant buy a new replacement.

Even more ridiculous.

People are paying over £30k for old shape 4 Series!

I still dont get why, I have spoken to 2 BMW dealers this week and both have said I could have a factory order BMW by Christmas so pretty much normal delivery.

I've heard that pretty much any 1 series order that hasn't been allocated a built slot yet has been pushed into 2022. I suspect that's nothing but nice things to smooth you over by the salesman until they've got your signature on the order. Either that or you'll be met with 'Sorry sir, you can't have that option. Or that one. Sadly that one isn't available at the moment either, but you can have one with no options by Christmas!'

Wireless charging, H&K Sound, HUD and many other options are unavailable or have actually been shipped to dealers without these options and they're now sitting in storage waiting for dealers to fit them. I'd imagine for some items it'll mean dash out and back in with the usual squeaks and rattles that comes along with.

My 2015 428i Gran Coupé is now up a grand since I bought it from a Dealer. Privately I could probably get £20k, a £2k profit. A shame everything else has shot up in price!

That's hardly out of the ordinary though - we ordered a Mini in the October and took delivery in the January and that was almost 4 years ago. That's always been the typical lead time.

What baffles me is that people seem happy to pay it. Mine is similar. Don't get me wrong, we have nice cars, but £20k? I'd be incredibly upset if I paid £20k for a car and got a 6+ year old previous model BMW that didn't say 'BMW M Power' on the engine.

Some Skoda dealers have completely sold out their 2022 allocation, also if you a new X5 tomorrow you're looking at Autumn 2022.

Interestingly cheap cars sub £1500 have not gone up, which is annoying because I've been driving around in a banger for the last 18 months or so and planned to get something decent.

I want/need an S-Max (Three kids, oldest 16 youngest 6 weeks so prefer three proper adult seats in the back and ISOFIX in the middle) but it's proving too expensive. Teenager just has to squash in the middle and live with it for now but we couldn't holiday like that.

Prices are daft for any of the more desirable ones. 7.5k+ for a 2011/2012 S-Max just seems way out there. My slightly older similar milage Mondeo isn't worth anywhere near that. Maybe we could go for a lesser model, but the Titanium X Sport ticks all the boxes (and I'm running a Titanium X Mondeo now so wouldn't want to downgrade). The cloth seats of other trim levels just look horrific when you factor in 10 years & 150k miles of someone elses kids grotting them up, no thanks. I can afford it, but I've just sold my house and we're saving towards a big deposit for a better place, don't want to jump into loans/finance until we sort out the living arrangements. Doesn't help there's no other cars that accomodate a full size middle seat with ISOFIX in the second row.

I think earlier in the year it wasn't affecting cheap/boring cars that much but it seems to be catching up these days. When everyone was reporting big gains in Q2 this year our car didn't seem to shift much, but in Q3 it's gone from about £6.6k to £7.5k (about 14% rise).

It's a highly unusual scenario now where (space permitting) you might be better off NOT selling your current car when buying a new one, just putting it SORN and then selling it when prices look to have plateau'd / turned the corner. Needs careful timing though.

It probably helps that the new 4-series is absolutely bloody disgusting. The 3 on the other hand, no idea why you’d take a £20-30k used one over a new one.

Is something like this hiked in price:

I've been out of the car market for a while but was looking at 2014 420i for 18k at around 45k mileage back in 2016/2017. I'm not sure what a reasonable price for a 3 year old 435d would be... but 23k doesn't seem too unreasonable hence the assumption that used German cars did not inflate as much in value.

Do you really look at that and think 'Yes, that looks great?'

Compared to other stuff around it doesn't seem so badly priced which makes me wonder. It really looks awful though with all that extra stuff stuck all over it, black badges, etc. The mileage is probably a factor I suppose.

It's a regular 4 series styled like an M4, why wouldn't it look great? When it comes to BMW I always lean towards M styling with their 3L diesel engines because I have no interest in gas guzzling M cars that only accelerate 1 second faster than the x35d variants.

Answered your own question there :D

The standard 435d M Sport is a decent looking car - ones covered in carbon rubbish just look terrible. It doesn't look like an M4, it looks like a 4 series diesel covered in stick on extras.

Well I think the M6 is one of the best looking cars BMW released but the regular 6 series looks like a bell end with that bullet shaped front end :(

I think they design BMWs to look ugly on purpose, there is no other explanation.

Older ones yes (2005 etc), new ones probably (new 4 series) but the sweet spot is around 2014, they're alright... M variants only!

Sounds like a ploy to push people in to buying the proper M cars lol. Don't want ugly, pay more. Though they are still quite ugly :D
