Ive read some of the posts on the Vostro 1500 and it seems perfect for my needs i.e a basic home/business pc that will aslo run games (with the 8600m gt option). It works out at £634 inc vat and delivery.

Onle cons seems to be it's heavy - 2.7Kg.

Are there any other choices for this kind of price.

Hi. I'll be carrying it around quite a bit so that extra 0.8 Kg is quite a lot. Dont really need 17in screen either I dont think. Looked at the Acer - £800. Yeah, out of budget. Are these the only options. Surely not. All I really need is a basic budget (£300-400) laptop but with a 7600/8600 gt with it.

Oh, I got it. Add vat and shipping = £550. Pretty good, but that's with the 1.4Ghz processor (just realised are we breaking the terms by talking about this. Everyone else seems to though in that official dell vostro thread)

Another Laptop to Consider is the Toshiba Satellite A210-11P..

Here are the Specs:

AMD Turon TL-56
2GB Ram
15.4 inch TruBrite 1280x800 Screen
200GB Hard Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 256mb
1.3 Mega Pixel Web Cam
802.11b/g
Bluetooth 2.0 EDR
Vista Home Prem
2.7KG

Can be Had for £600... from an site i can't say...

Another Option....

Hi. Yeah the satellite seems OK, Similar price. Nearly as fast as the dell in gaming. Same weight. Looks nicer But Is a bit wider and uses 'monstrous' external power supply according to a review. But what's the dell power supply like? Also battery life was 1 hour 10 minutes. Has 2 GB, but I only need one. I also want XP. Not sure whether you can choose that as an option.
Portability probably more important than specs for me.

Check out he HP dv2000 series of laptops.

For £700 mine here is running a T5450, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, 8400GS 64MB Graphics, DVD-RW Lighscribe, 14" 1280x800 screen, built in webcam/microphone, finger print scanner, media remote control, memory card read, a/b/g wireless.

The graphics is a bit weak but enough to play HL2 EP2 at native res with medium settings and 2xAA,Tri-Linear Filtering. Not great but enough to get by. The battery life is about 2.5 hours but the weight is nice and low. Plus the built in speakers arn't that bad, altec lansing ones that while not brilliant are better than the usual fodder you get.

I dont think a Vostro 1500 with the 8600 graphics can be beaten by any manufacturer atm. Certainly should work out < £700 and having seen one, they are a vyer nice sleek laptop. No silver areas to wear etc, just a nice matt black finish throughout.

The screen is excellent, its silent in use from what i could tell and the keybaord was very nice to type on.

I really cant find anything better, i just hope the prices hold for when i want to buy next month!!
